K&N Air Filter & Performance Gains

Anybody got any info on the BHP increase one gets when fitting a K&N Air Filter to a Boxster S ?

As you may have guessed, this question opens up a real can of worms!

I have previously searched extensivly online for answers to the K&N filter question, and cannot find conclusive evidence, but have been made aware of many other factors that also need to be considered.

I actually thought we were having an interesting debate on the subject.[:-]

In the scheme of things, it's a cheap 'upgrade', that will make the Boxster sound nicer, but may or may not add some BHP, (which probably won't be noticeable anyway).

PM me if you're interested in some of the many links I've stored which contain useful information, with lots of conflicting data, but none of which answer your question. [8|]

Yuo have to balance ...

possibly zero increase (more induction noise, zero extra power),

or maybe 3-5bhp increase (not noticeable)

against the possible risk of MAF failure due to additional contamination of the platinum wire from the oil impregnated filter element.

My view - save your £40 for the cost of a spirited drives fuel !

Unless you are willing to clean the filter on a weekly (or at least monthly) basis you wont get the performance benefits advertised by K&N as due to the increased airflow they clog very quickly to the extent that they restrict to the same level as a std filter - and even then are you going to really notice an extra 3-5hp? Balance this with the fact the insurance company will load you premium is it really worth it? Direct Line wanted to load my premium by 10% for a K&N filter!!
