Was having a browse on EBAY and came across the above, is it a worth while replacement for the current air filter?

Claims of increased bhp and better sound ?

Came across it myself and from my experience (and results of many tests performed on panel filters), non result in power gains unless combined with an exhaust where 5bhp seems to be realistic expectation. This is hardly going to be noticeable. As for the sound, you will be hard press to hear any. The induction kit gives better sound by thats a different cattle all together.

However, for £50 and with the prospect of being re-usable, it would probably repay itself in a couple of service. So buy it. Just wondered why he is selling since the financial benefit of keeping it is evident

Has anyone fitted the GT3 CUP style air filter that does away with the air box completly, like on the race cars, and if so how does it work without the forced air induction etc from the rear spoiler inlet, can the CUP filter be fitted to a std car ?

Also has anyone fitted one of the"cat back" open pipes like on the race cars, marketed by design 911 (fabspeed) ?

This subject has come up a lot on other sites & there is a great thread on this very subject to be found under the Porsche section of www.pistonheads.com (it was a few weeks ago, but you could do a search).
The long & short of it was there is little or no gain (maybe even a loss as the v shape of the standard air filter offers a larger surface area & can actually pass more air than a flat foam design) the filters also let a lot more crap into the engine, potentially putting dirt onto air sensor, which can cut performance. Some designs also ingest hot air directly from a hot engine, rather than using a box with cold air feeder alla standard!
The final conclusion was it is only worth considering the "cup type" filters (as Porsche use in the race cars) if you have a HIGHLY modified engine that cannot draw enough air through the standard unit, which has plenty of spare capacity for minor mods to engine, exhaust etc etc.

Grant,
Thanks for such an in depth explanantion, I will check out the link for some reading

Also, my OPC told me that fitting a Cup filter to a standard 996 will invalidate the warranty.
