K&N Filter - Joke Part!

Bought one a while ago (thankfully it was cheap) and had a dabble fitting it today. Not a cat-in-hells chance of it fitting the boss inside the air box - when I compared the original to the K&N the dimension along the long part of the oval aperture of the K&N filter was 5-6mm too small. Had a few goes and did some Googling over a brew before a further attack - seems it's a problem highlighted previously on the Planet9 forum:-

Standard air filter has remained.

My advice - don't bother!.
 
Chris, Are you sure that the filter was for a 987 rather than for a 986 (Boxster). I know that the airbox was significantly enlarged for the 987-series cars. Re your other posts: 1) The underdrive pulley will reduce the effective gearing of components such as the alternator, coolant, PAS and A/C pumps. Although it will lower the stress on the bearings of these components as well as reducing their windage/pumping losses (which presumably gives the power gains you mention - although minimally I would suggest), it will reduce their performance. Is there any evidence to suggest that you won't be storing up longer-term problems? 2) I know from experience that manufacturers spend a significant amount of time designing and developing the components of the powertrain mounting system to achieve optimum refinement (noise and vibration). You don't show the original mounts but, although they might appear to be identical or similar in appearance, it's likely that the specs for the 993/964 RS mounts are very different from those of the Cayman's in terms of shore hardness and stiffness. Also, I believe that the Cayman uses a hyro-mount which is fluid-filled, designed to reduce powertrain "shake" at idle speed and low revs by damping the vibration. Personally, I'd have been inclined to bite the bullet and stick with the original spec and to replace the front mount while you're at it (you've already noted the sag on the rear mounts, and the front mount will have aged in a similar manner). I'll be interested to hear your comments once you've had the chance to evaluate your updates. Jeff
 
Hi Jeff The filter was correct for the Cayman (K&N part number 2295) it was just impossible to get over the boss in the air box. As regards the under drive pulley = will report back, but the guys at Sharkwerks reported no problems and they have fitted quite a few so far. Let's see how things go - will keep the board informed. The standard Cayman mounts are shown in the second picture - they are fluid filled type and are common across a number of models as well as the Cayman. I'll report back once I get to drive (which will be tomorrow) as I have spent the morning replacing the front mount which is a real pain to do but I have just finished it. Let's see how she drives..............
 
Chris, Well done on getting that sorted. It'll be interesting to see how she drives with the new mounts. Still not totally convinced about the 993 transmission mounts. Even Pellican Parts note that they're only "functionally eqivalent", so I suspect that the spec is somewhat different from those for the Cayman given that the 993 was air-cooled and had a different transmission. But if it all works to your satisfaction, at least you'll have done the job for half the price. Looking again at your pics, I'm really not impressed by the mount bracketry - it looks a bit of a lash-up for £200+ per side. Why they didn't do a proper job and make the bracket a single casting to incorporate some fore-aft stiffness beats me. Cost-cutting measures most probably. Jeff

Cheers Jeff - I'll post once I have had a few miles on them, I have to agree about the original mounting brackets, they are bit naff to say the least!. The RS mounts are £105 each less PCGB discount and the dreaded VAT. Nobody more curious than me! Until Wednesday................
