K&N filter

Hi All,

My car is due for a service next month and was wondering if it's worth while replacing the air filter with either a K&N or pipercross?
Do they make a difference or am I wasting my money?

Steve,

This is a bag of worms of some proportion!! FWIW I'll give you my two pen'orth.

IF the K&N is installed by someone who knows what they are doing and cleaned and re-oiled correctly at service time, it's my opinion that it will give you many years of service whilst saving you approx. £11 at each service for the unused paper filter and giving you a slightly better audible soundtrack when you put your foot down. If your expectation is to get more power - forget it!!

There are those who will warn you of the consequences of more dirt/grit/junk getting passed into the induction and, again, my view is that these warnings are relevant IF the filter is badly fitted/oiled. Over-oiling can result in contamination of the induction system , particularly the Idle Stabilisation Valve.

I have had a K&N fitted on my car since the first ever service I paid for back in 2005 and, although I don't do huge mileages, I have never experienced a problem. Given that it's around £40 I'm just about starting to gain on the deal.

Other opinions will be expressed, no doubt.

Regards

Dave
