K&N Filter

Is it worth swapping the standard air filter for a K&N panel? And perhaps fitting a full induction kit? I'm thinking of doing this with a Carnewal exhaust and Revo ECU programme to my 987S to perk it up a bit.

Had the Revo upgrade on an Audi TTS before and it added 30bhp (turbo engine, mind you) and improved fuel economy by 10% instantly too.

The 987 S already uses a high capacity air filter, de snorkelling or fitting an oil type single layer filter may improve the sound but wornt give any real Hp gain. Remaps will give quoted figures of between 10 and 20 hp gain and similar values for torque. De snokelling or removing the baffle plate on the intake increases the risk of water droplets getting into the air filter and blocking it when driving in rain, so not an ideal mod for the UK. Many of the Hp claims by tuners are often unsubstantiated , so ideally get a rolling road or dyno figure before and after and a guarantee of money back if you dont get the claimed results. The carnewal exhaust mod will give better sound , but its not claimed to give any performance gains , even though it removes the rear catalysts. The 3.2 S uses a performance manifold already so the only upgrade to the exhaust IMHO is to get the primary cats in the manifolds replaced with hi flow performance ones. If you are looking for a bolt on upgrade to a 987 3.2 S the fitting of the cayman throttle body and intake distributor tube will give a 7-10 hp gain from 4500 -6000 rpm with 10 ft lbs of torque over a similar range. The mpg is marginally improved and throttle response sharpened , with no requirement to remap the ECU.

..also be warned with regards the K&N, it, as are many after market filters, feature an oiled filter. Many who have used this type have suffered from MAF contamination especially after cleaning/re-oiling.

Thanks guys - will weigh up the options. It's the sound I'd like to improve more than the power. Had the official PSE on my 997S but it's way too expensive to retrofit to my 987S 3.4. Carnewal seems a good mod, and can be bought with sports cats too to boost power as well.[]

I have fitted a genuine K&N on my 986 and I think it gives a tad more donkeys. It does improve the sound. When you have the Porsche filter in the engine must feel its like sucking a straw.

True statement for the 986 S but not the 987. The 986 S and the anniversary model which has more power only differ on the airbox and filter in terms of spec in the parts catalogue. Porsche made a big fanfare with the 987 that the air filter capacity was greatly improved which also allowed for a longer service interval. The gains you get in most cases are a slight improvmeent in throttle response and marginal peak power. As has been advised before , tread carefully with this kind of mod as it can be detrimental to the mass air flow sensor particularly if oil carries over from the element .
