is it worth while puting a K&N filter on my 06 18,000 mile cayman S.. are there any benefits does the engine breathe more easy

cheers

I assume you are talking about the filter that fits in the OEM position and not a cylindrical cone. From Experience from other cars (Not Cayman) the K&N gives a small increase in power. The big difference is the filter is reusuable (you normally clean it more frequently than they recommend). This saves money in the long run. K&N is a quality product - formula 1 teams have used K&N.

I've no experience with the Cayman motor, but in my 996 I was always warned against an oil-impregnated filter like K&N as the oil can build up on the MAF sensor and cause problems.

I had the same issue on a previous car with the oil clogging the maff which had to be replaced. Paper filters are relatively cheap so not much to gain long term in using one and although I am sure its possible to achieve some performance increase I didn't notice any.

Heard that guaze filters clog up the MAF sensor so I'd steer clear. Might be small particles from the oil (needed for the filter to work effectively) getting onto the sensor. The other thing is that it is really difficult to re-oil the filter properly so you'd be better off buying a new filter to be sure of correct oiling. The paper filter is fine and there is plenty other things you can do to improve power so I don't think the cone or panel filters are worth it.
