does this fit a 996 NA 1996 tip. HAs anyone any experience of it inc its claim of up to 23 HP. Any potential damage is this the same as the plenum

I have one fitted to my 1998 996 tiptronic, and, although already fitted when I bought it a couple of year's ago, there does seem to be different sound from others of the same year and it does go like the proverbial. John

Have been reports of MAF sensors being damaged from the oil that is used in these kind of filters.
23bhp seems generous.

Search the 996 forum on the item 'K&N'.

1.5"???????? Go Meng! Superb. Must have a listen. How was your experience at style dynamix?

Great lads thanks for intro rohit west London may soon have another Indie Porsche Sid ps I am a biker by heart so loud it has to be !! The m030 is good but should have gone for bushes as it isn't too hard for me

My pleasure Meng. Those lads are good. Still lots to learn but did a good job! Has Sid opened up yet?

The sound is cancelled out/ deadend in the air box by the Helmholtz resonator its that little box inside it.
You can get more dB by capping it off but I think this in time can also cause a "check engine light".

The Helmholtz doesn't do anything but reduce the sound/resonating. No CEL with or without it. ;-)

I've done it on my car and the effect isn't very noticable but combined with a BMC filter and a replacement air pipe it's pretty noisy from 5000 rpm.

Yes as mentioned before its a canceling harmonic
If the Y piece is left in place it will still will cause a resonance
And yes the excess oil from your BMC filter could destroy your MAF sensor and if un-oiled a standard paper filter works better anyway..

Paper filters cost pennies, change them more often and throw them away, you can buy 5 for the cost of one K&N or BMC.

I have it on good authority that replacing the filter actually work, at least on pre e-gas cars. [;)] Oil spill on MAF is mostly a cone filter problem.

I think the BMC panel filters are pretty trouble free. The problem with the cone filters is that they are smaller, and much closer to the MAF. A bit too much oil, and it sticks to the hot film and stops it reading correctly.

Do these aftermarket air filters really make a difference.

I would understand if it was going in a Golf GTI (I have had four of them in the past)

But surely not on a Porka!!!

If it aint broke, dont fix it!!

The cone filters do give a louder induction sound. The power claims are baloney IMO.

If you take an X51 kit, it includes new heads, cams, valves, inlet manifold, exhaust manifold, loads of other bits and pieces, and a remap to the DME. The result? 20bhp.

And i bet it costs more than a k&n induction kit!

Just slightly. £7500 for the 3.4 and £6400 for the 3.6. That's just the kit - fitting is extra (over 30 hours IIRC).

996 The Essential Companion by Streather says

"It's a complete waste of time installing after market air filter assemblies on the standard full water cooled 3.4 and 3.6 M96 engines...the DMU decides how much air is going to be let in the engine, not the driver.....it might make a better induction noise, but that's about it"
"Note. The factory option X51 engine performance kits do not make any changes to the air cleaner assembly even though the entire air intake system is replaced"

I agree with the "if it ain't bust......"
