K&N on SC - yes or no ?

Hi,

Searched the forum ( like a good PCGB forum member [;)] ) and found some pretty negative comments about using a K&N panel filter instead of the stock paper one.

So ( apologies if I'm asking people to repeat themselves - Bones, Richard B ), a simple question ( with a one word answer - to keep it brief ),

Do you use a K&N in your SC - yes or no ?

Gary would think a complete change i.e a Cone as below run it and decide simple to refit existing airbox with an SC I think............have one in my garage if you wish to borrow it.....gave more top end grunt and some, lost a bit of down low torque...

Because one would expect to get a high mileage from an engine used on the road and using a K&N may compromise that, there is a particular thread on Pelican which goes on at length about the oil dust filled debris found beyond the filter element inside the filter box of SCs fitted with K&Ns. The stock paper filter has been tested in the deserts of the world and allows a great deal of air to flow to the engine. For track use where you might expect an engine to be rebuilt at more frequent intervals ,and with a higher state of engine tune then a K&N will undoubtedly flow more air. If you religiously look after the K&N filter as instructed then they may be ok for the road but most owners I would suggest fit them and forget them, not a good idae with a K&N. I used to use K&Ns on my two-stroke road and race bikes but then they were re-ringed and barelled frquently, I wouldn't use a K&N on my 911, the paper filter is excellent and cheap to replace in my view and the 'performance benefit' on a stock engine is negligible if it exists, not worth the risk I say.

Rather interesting comments and I do agree with you on a few of your points but at the same time I am not convinced that their is such a "risk" in running a K&N filter on a road car. We run K&N on our race cars and they are rebuilt after each races and so on so indeed not likely to be a problem there but I raised this question with both our Engine Manager (a man of taste as he runs a 3.2 Carrera) and the technical people at K&N and both confirmed to me that running such a filter on a road car is not likely to provoque any problems. One of the main point K&N made to me however is the fact that a lot of people tend to re-oil their filter far too often and far too much/or too little which tends to reduce the airflow/or decrease filter capabilities rather than improve it but appart from that, no real issues. It therefore seems to suggest to me that any problems found with k&n filters is more to do with poor maintenance or bad re-oiling (is there such a word) than the filter itself (for info, such filters should not be re-oiled before 50k !!!!!).




 
Generally agaree with you but there are no provable benefits to fitting K&Ns to a stock road going SC why bother and take risks with the engine's health, if owners want more poke go the tried and TESTED route of early HEs with a dynoed exhaust like my Triad. It doesn't surprise me that K&N would say there own product is safe, maintained properly it may well be. If cosmetics are a problem there at least two replacement CSI airbox covers out there.
 
When i declared a K&N on the 964 it cost me £40 for modding the car
PS. IMO It made no driving difference what so ever.........
just the filter purchase and the extra insurance costs [:mad:]
 
Hi Elliot , I can't believe the fools charged you extra for fitting a K&N filter, I'd like to hear their arguement for that?
