Kangaroo behavour ??

Good evening.....

Having had the car for 6 months now I am really enjoy Porsche ownership again - especially in this weather.

Anyway, I am however having a small problem; when first started the idle is not really that smooth and when out and about it often misses a few beats especially when coasting upto junctions or round abouts. (Never when on full throttle!!)

A good example of this is the Sat morning run to take the kids swimming - 4 miles each way and the journey can be great or "jumpy". If I then use the car for the rest of the day she never misses a beat.

As you might recall from previous threads I have replaced the dizzy and rotor arm already. Does anyone have any ideas why, when a little cold, this might happen? Do you think the car is just need a good tune up, does it sound like dodgy leads, should I change the fuel filter - or do you think she just needs more driving!!

As always all comments or ideas really welcome.

Hope you are all enjoying the weather....

Thanks in advance....Frazer

I had exactly the same problem for a few months, only when cold it would surge and die the run perfectly when warm. Then one day it refused to start. Its been stuck outside the door dead for a month now .

Thought that might cheer you up lol[:D]

Feeling "worried" now.....cheers Peanut!

Think the tune up might be a good idea - if it is still the same afterwards blame it on something the indie did!!

Could be lack of use my car did simialr very occasionally but after some good use it seems fine now and hasn't done it since so far at least anyways

If its an S2 there is something about letting it idle after reconecting ( or changing) a battery which makes them run a lot smoother. Also something bout a temp sensor which affects cold running - not an S2 expert but no doubt someone will be along who remembers better,

My car had similar symptoms in that whenever I was coasting slowly with my foot off the throttle, say in a slow moving traffic jam, the car would kangaroo qite violently. I also got irratic idle, sometimes it would be very low boardering on stalling, then suddenly jump upto 1500 rpm and other times just hunt around. It turned out to be my AFM and the car was running lean at idle when the idle microswitch was pressed. The car was fine under throttle. I got a 2nd hand AFM installed and set up and ever since the car has idled perfectly without a flutter and I don't kangaroo anymore. I realise this is not exactly the same problem as you describe but at least it is something you can check out. My problem was discovered by an AFR check with the probe up the exhaust pipe.

Hey don't worry about Kangarooing, wait until it starts doing the Wombat! How much can a Koala Bear???[:D][:D][:D]

I'd be suspecting the HT leads, AFM (try the microswitch) or (possibly) an air leak somewhere.

Find an expert, or try some DIY to pinpoint the problem.

If battery has been disconnected let engine run for 15 mins or so to reset electrics

Or so my garage used to claim

I once had some serious kangerooing accompanied by a clonk on de-acceleration 3 months later the clutch finaly failed at 7pm in the dark in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the only snow storm the South West had that year ..
The surge was clearly caused by the rubber doughnut breaking up but two garages failed to diagnose it.
have a nice day now y'hear

Car is a lot better when warm - but still not perfect. Under acceleration the problem never arises but on slowing or coasting you can hear the engine falter a little.

I would like to test the HT leads myself before I hand it over the my indie but not really sure how to do this. Is it as case of measuring the resistance across the lead and looking for a reading different from the rest.

Any help appreciated as always,

Frazer

How much is a new AFM please?

I didn't buy it brand new, I got it from a breakers and paid £50 for it. It did look shiny and new and the breaker reckoned it probably was pretty new due to its condition so it seems I may have lucked out there.

On HT leads, it is not the lead conductivity which breaks down, it's the insulation around it.

You can test them yourself very easily - on a dark night, start the car and look under the bonnet. If you can see any arcing around the leads, they are shot.

You can make the test better with a spray bottle of water - the sort of thing little old ladies use to water their potplants. When the engine is running, spray a fine mist of water all around the HT leads and see if it arcs then.

Or find a local person who owns the same model of car and swap leads for an hour. The diagnosis is two-way, so more helpful. (Do your leads make his car run badly? Do his leads make yoru car run better?)

Would you believe it - local classic car expert came back with me tonight to pick up the car from cold so he could get a feel for the car before they work on it tomorrow......car started as always and then proceeded to run perfectly smooth!!!!!!!! not a hint of a miss or a kangaroo bounce. I can only hope it plays up for him tomorrow morning when he starts it.

On the slight oil leak I have just now, from what looks like the bottom of the oil filter, he said this is a common problem - something to do with the screw in the middle of the filter - anyone had an oil leak here - are the S2's prone to this?

He is confident that he will have all problems investigated, fixed and the car tuned by Thursday morning so I'll report back when I get it. Can't wait to have it running smoothly.

Away to give the "M" a blast - its just had a BMW software upgrade which seemingly gives better performance - can't say I notice anything so far. Enjoy the sun and I hope you are all out driving instead of reading this...

cheers....Frazer
