keeping a 993 outside

Hi,

I have looked a several 993 and hope to purchase very soon. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on how these cars would survive if parked outside on a drive way rather than in a garage.

I thought about this a great deal before buying my 993. Should I build a garage? (which would be really complex given limited access to driveway and position of house on land etc), do I move house....?

I went and bought the car and it sits outside on the drive way. That was 3 years ago (today!). It still makes me smile every time I look out of the kitchen window. It has not suffered one bit from the wild west-of-Scotland weather (rain bucketing down right now).

The benefit of being outside is that, when it does get wet, it dries out quicking in the wind (rather than sitting in a damp garage) - but I'm very jealous of the guys with nice large, heated, dehumidified, garages... - Anyway it should be on the road, not in a garage or driveway!

Go for it.

Mike,

Mine lives outside fine, just like the 944 that came before (road or drive, depending on whether the wife beats me home - the motorbike claims the garage!). No problems at all, although I do know that in some areas there are problems with the teardrop mirrors being stolen. The decision is more a security one than anything else - what chance is there of theft, vandalism, etc.

Cheers/John

Mine has been on my driveway for over 4 years. Just make sure you put a regular coat of quality wax on it once or preferably twice a year especially before the Autumn and Winter sets in. Oh, and make sure you keep an eye out for bird sh*t and get it off as soon as it appears. A good coat of wax will ensure that this is all that gets damaged rather than burning through the topcoat.

Is there much to chose between the different types of car wax? I have seen Zymol advertised quite extensively...

No you've gone and done it.....

mines been outside 2 years.... no issues......wax twice a year and invest in good quality car cover....

I totally agree with John as I believe its more of a security issue than anything else. If I hade the choice I would prefer to keep it in a garage for that reason alone. As someone who has had his mirrors stolen I can relate to this post. It does, however, depend on where you live and if it is a high risk area.

Mine lived outside in rain, snow, sun and all other conditions. Keep her clean and polished, wash road salt off always and you ought to be fine. The only thing is the risk of having your wing mirror stolen...

That's a good idea. Can it be used on a 993 by plugging in to the cigarette lighter or does it have to be connected directly to the battery??

As for keeping a 993 outside, mines been kept in the driveway for 3 years without a problem. Personally i wouldn't go down the car cover route as i had one once on a 914. It broke a strap during a night of strong winds and beat the car to death.

The cigarette lighter must be receiving current even when the ignition is off. Mine isn't wired up this way and I assume no one elses 993 is either. The guys over the pond on Rennlist seem to be wired up permanently though and can use the cigarette lighter for this. I don't know if you can rewire it to allow this, but I'd be draining the battery as I'm always leaving my iPod or phone charger plugged in!

The best way to charge the battery on a 993 is 10mins on a clear road... though the car should never be used so little that te battery needs a charge :)
