key remote control problem

I have a 99 boxster, One of the remote controls on the key has stopped working. I've tried replacing the battery to no avail.

I've noticed that when you press the button to lock or unlock on the key the little red led flashes slowly, whereas the one that still works flashes much faster.

A friend of mine who knows somebody in my local dealer asked them how it can be fixed.

They said this is apparently a common fault and that the remote would need to be replaced and that this can only be done at a dealer as they have to get special codes from the factory which need to be programmed into the remote.

Total cost £160+vat!!!

Has anybody had this fault??

Any help would be much appreciated.

Has the remote button been pressed up against something (in a bag perhaps)?

If the remote button is operated more than 256 times without being received by the car's receiver then it can be "locked out".

Try this:

Switch on the ignition with the good key

Switch off ignition

Remove key from steering lock

Operate the transmitter within 6 seconds after the key is removed

This should reset the count of operations to zero (as it is every time a recognised transmieer operation is received).

If the key is operated more than 1024 times without being received it cannot be reset.

I know you are an Anorak 'par excellence' but where on earth did you dig these little gems from?

JCB..

Operate the transmitter within 6 seconds after the key is removed

by this do you mean press the remote on the not working key?

Mark im sorry if thats a daft question[:-]

Not daft at all - it is not clear.
I think it is the "dead" key, but if it does not work then try the working one (nothing to lose!)

See - I don't know either...[:D]

Thanks for all the replies.

Mark, I tried you suggestions, no luck I'm afraid.

The "non working" remote key does start the car.

Any other suggestions?

I had this and tried most everything. In the end it was down to the OPC. Although they quoted 150+, but they said they'd do the PCGB discount ... in the event the final bill was 125. To be honest all these gizmos cost a bomb to replace and there is a small elemnt of labour involved. I used Owens in Hatfield Herts if that is any help.
