Key stuck in ignition

Hi all,

Not sure if anyone else has had this problem but dad's 996 (2003 car) has just decided to not let him take the key out!.

The car seems well charged and gets regular use.

I read on another site that there is a pin hole that you can stick a paperclip in but not sure about doing this as it could damage the switch.

Any ideas would be most appreciated.

It is most likely the ignition switch that has broken, not allowing the barrel to turn back completely and release the key. It is a very common problem, and there is a DIY in the Technical Articles section.
 
It is a auto box, in park & handbrake on. Car is off to the garage today as we suspect the ignition barrel as previously suggested
 
Where are you taking it? If it is to a Porsche Centre, they will replace the whole lock barrel, whereas an indy would replace just the switch.
 
Thanks for your help, we took it to Northway, they did a great job and sub £100. Great guys and go there to have it serviced

All ready now for the classic le-mans
