Keys (What I have and what I should have?)

when I recently bought my 79 manual I only received 1 set of keys so the first order of business is to obtain a duplicate in case they get lost.

The owners manual states that for a non central locking car I should have

A Key - Master Key - fits all locks except rear seat storage
B Key - Auxillary Key - fits all locks except glovebox and rear seat storage
C Key - Rear Seat Storage Compartment

what I appear to have however is

1. Black key which fits ignition, rear deck, drivers door
2. Red key - which fits the fuel cap (also red) and passenger door

and nothing at all which fits the glovebox or rear storage locker

This doesn't seem right to me and I'm wondering if one or more locks have been changed over the years

Any suggestions as to how to resolve this and if possible end up with a single key which does everything would be appreciated

thanks

Mark

Mark,

I did a little investigation when i need a new key for my 87. I also identifed when new there were three keys. A master key which fits everything except the rear seat storage. This master key was a HUFF blade which requires a head normally with a little light. An auxillary key which was a black plastic key and a Rear seat storage key which also had a black plastic head. The red head keys are normally replacements kits with the fuel cap for example. It does sound like the locks have been replaced over the years. I can however help with the rear storage key. I contacted Douglas Valley scrap yard who was able to supply a rear storage compartment key. I originally went to Porsche who are still able to cut the key for you. Apparently all storage comparment keys are the same???? however they cost around £80. I think Douglas Valley charged around £10 - £15. They should also be able to help with a full key kit which is cheaper then buying new.

Thanks
Dave

Thanks Dave

So if I speak to Douglas valley and they happen to have a complete lock and key set, are they interchangeable between years?

looks like £175 for a complete lock set from a breaker, so that may well be the easiest way to go I think

Mark,

175 doesn't seem to bad at all. Douglas Valley are pretty good and are reasonable with postage prices. I don't know how many keys they would supply you but if you need extra cut use the following http://www.keys4classics.com/. All you need to do is to send them a few close up photos of the key at various angles and they will identify the key code from the pictures. I had an extra HUFF blade cut plus another standard plastic head key. They arrive in around a week or so from Australia.
