Kickdown switch?

According to the car manual: "The kickdown function can be activated mechanically via the kickdown switch or dynamically by rapidly depressing the accelerator pedal......Changing down can also be activated by rapidly depressing the accelerator pedal. In this case the kickdown switch does not have to be operated" The kickdown activated via the accelerator pedal is, I think, standard on all automatics, but what/where is the kickdown switch the manual refers to? (which the text seems to suggest is a standard feature rather than an add-on) I know Brett has kindly answered this question, but I am confused by the text...

Hi GENE :)

Ok,,,,,what that means is this......the actual kickdown is controlled by a valve on the gearbox (at back)....but....it works in 2 ways...

1, The valve knows speed and revs etc ,so changes down WHEN it THINKS it should ....at NORMAL speeds etc...thats controlled by vacuum, cables etc etc.

2, Under ABNORMAL conditions...i.e. you STAMP your foot to the floor....because you want MAJOR accelleration.....there is ALSO an electrical switch UNDER the base of the throttle pedal...this OVERRIDES the valve at the back and gives an INSTANT KICKDOWN to a lower gear....at least in theory...if you want it even faster kickdown,,,you wire in a bypass switch on the dash like me...and SLIGHT throttle makes it INSTANTLY kick down instead of full throttle...

I have oversimplified that a lot for ease of understanding , but I hope you see what I mean ?

All the best Brett :)
