What are the kidney bowls? My Sc is showing the beginings of some corrosion around the drivers side door lock panel and edge of the sill, passenger side seems fine. I have been looking on the europarts site at the Dansk parts which are very reasonable when I came across "kidney bowls" I have heard of these but thought this was the name of the door shut panel that is notorious for corrosion on these models, so where are the kidney bowls located?

hi nick,
your kidney bowls? if you look in the rear wheel arch towards the front of the car you will see them welded on to the inner panel just in before the door lock panel. you can put your hand in there in between the lock panel and the k/bowl and see if you can crumble them using your fingers.
the 911 is not that well designed at this point,as there is not an inner arch. what happens is that dirt gets thown up from the wheels and lodges between the bowl and the lock latch panel which is also weled onto the rear end of the sill and then starts to rust. a rough prich for this , new piece of sill, door latch panel, kidney bowl and repainted is about £2000-2500p depending on how bad it is, but ofcouse you can only tell once its been cut open.
what the repair shop would do is to cut the lower rear wheel panel off and this allows access to the area.

Sure it's Berny Tester in Stowmarket but that's a long way from the North East, he should be able to find a reasonably priced body shop up there, best thing to do is contact the Regional Organiser and or go to some local club meetings and get to know what the word on the street is.

Yeh, I will have a word with myself, see what I can sort out. Anyway, just looked in the rear arch (drivers side) of mine, there does'nt appear to be any kindney bowl, you can see straight to the rear of the lock panel and the nuts holding the lock inplace, there are a couple of large oil pipes and behind them the left side buldges out a couple of inches but its all undersealed and feels solid enough, looks like the corrosion is around lock area, do they all have kidney bowls?[8D]

Nick, it doesn't look that much like what you might think.
I hope Mr. Moss won't mind me showing this pic of one of his restos, gives you a clear indication of what a kidney bowl (arrowed) looks like.

The rot you are talking about is definitely going to be kidney bowl-related, but you won't know how bad it is until your bodyshop cuts out the corrosion on the b-post, with a bit of luck it won't be too bad.
I have had a good prod at the kidney bowl and it seems solid so hopefully I can catch it in time, whilst I'm on I seem to be having to slam the passenger door particularly hard in order to get it to shut properly the drivers side is better but still needs a good shove, any advice on adjustments to help this, cheers.[]
