Kinked plastic window

Incept

New member
Hi,

This is my first post since selling my 993 and joining the Boxster community....Long story!

I got a 2002 with a plastic window and there's a small kink in the window right in my line of sight.

I wondered if anyone had a cure.

I thought about heating it gently with a hair-dryer and trying to 'iron' it out. Then I thought some of you guys might have a safer option!!

Any advice would be gratefully received

Cheers,

Chris

Hi Chris,

Firstly, is the hood tensioned correctly? Or has a hardtop been fitted?

The screens do become more flexible with a little heat, even in this country they vary a lot in flexibility winter to summer so gentle heating with a fan heater to warm it overall to hand warmth may give some benefit and then maybe some pressure with a hand covered with a microfibre cloth and someone supporting around from the other side.

A hair dryer may be a little too much heat they can be as much as 2Kw! Similar heat output to a paint stripper!

If the weather was warmer and the hood tensioned well on the screen area it may improve anyway, or if you want to improve over the existing screen you can get it replaced as original or improve totally and have a glass windowed hood fitted. The latter is a much favoured solution, it even adds a demister.[:D]

Hi and thanks for your reply.

I had been wondering about a glass screen replacement and noticed someone had had one fitted recently.

However at 600 quid I was a little apprehensive that I'd get my money back if I ever sold it!

I did think about the hair drier as well. Wondered about heating it up a little and using some kind of roller both sides at once.

Thanks for your tips though.

Cheers,

Chris

Forgive this if you know already, but you do know not to lower the roof below about 5 degrees C don't you? The plastic window will break.

Also, when you are lowering the roof, make sure you smooth out any kinks halfway (known as the "Boxster Chop"). Be careful if it's cold though - I know of at least one owner who put his hand straight through the plastic because it was too cold!
