Knackered clutch 2005 997C2S

My mate has been told that his 2005 997C2S needs a new clutch at 25k miles! He noticed it slipping on a motorway run back from Manchester (I was with him and drove the car the previous day and it was fine).
Dealer reckons first owner (my mate bought it 2 years ago) has probably thrashed the car (although its general condition and faultless behaviour says otherwise) - basically these things happen and tough $hit so he's looking at £1500 for a new clutch. He didn't take the extended warranty (although he wasn't offered it) but even so I reckon they'd try to exclude it as a wear and tear item.

Porsche Customer Service are not interested in a goodwill contribution to the repair, which I think is harsh given the low mileage.

Any thought/ experiences out there ?

Mine went about about the same distance on the same age car too.
I think 25k miles is pretty good if it is second hand and has been driven hard / tracked.
I paid £1048 + VAT for a new clutch kit, it is unlikely he needs a completely new clutch, I think they need to take the gearbox out to know that for sure which i imagine at Porsche labour rates would cost a lot more that £1500.

Extended warranty wouldn't cover it, as you rightly say it is a wear and tear item.
He can still get an extended warranty and i recommend he gets one just for peace of mind.

Goodwill & Porsche do not go in the same sentence unfortunately in my experience.

On the plus side, tell your mate he is in for a treat when the new clutch is fitted it will feel like he is in a totally different car, the power transfer will be like a catapult compared to a clutch that has probably been slipping for some time.

Clutches are a wear item, like brake pads, tyres, etc.

25k miles is fairly low, but a poor driving style can cause premature wear.

He can always ask to see the parts after they are replaced.

Hi Peter. Forget about goodwill on a clutch - it's never going to happen, the warranty wouldn't have made the slightest difference.

I would advise your mate to at least get a quote for a new clutch from an independent Porsche garage. IMO they do a better job than OPC and this is something that you need to get completely right. I had my RMS done (under warranty) at 14,000 and decided to put a new clutch in at the same time - as the gearbox was already off. The clutch (from an OPC) cost about £300 for the whole clutch kit.

Get a quote from an Independent - you won't be sorry.

Adrian.

Thanks for these comments guys - very helpful. I'll suggest that my mate doesn't waste his breath on a goodwill claim but gets a quote from at least one indie Porsche man - I'm sure there's at least one in Glasgow.

Cheers

Mr Graham................may I suggest that you look in the Scotland region. There's a thread there which gives a few indies which I'm sure would do a clutch. Peter at Motortune (Shotts) seems to be a favourite!!

Would be interested in how much it's going to cost as I also have a 997 2S (not that it's needing a clutch)........one careful lady driver.......!!
