Knock from rear not on braking

Hi All,

Had a search through the threads but cannot find the same symptoms as mine.

At speeds circa 20mph a loud and stable knocking noise is coming from the rear "clonk clonk clonk clonk". It happens whether in gear or not. On speeding up it seems to also speed up until you can't hear it anymore (I imagine other noise is what's taking over as opposed to it going away).

It disappears on applying the brakes. Say at 25mph "clonk clonk clonk" > Brake for a second of quiet > "clonk ... clonk ... clonk" slower now as going slower.

Any ideas?

Regular clonking from the rear that is speed related is quite often the CV joint. I am guessing the application of brakes takes away the load.

You can get away with taking off the drive shafts and turning them around so that the load is on the opposite face of the joint, then repacking with fresh grease, though new ones will not totally break the bank.

I see. Just to add a bit of info.

Up on the ramps there is some play between the diff and coupling for the driveshafts.

The joints were all repacked a couple of weeks ago.
