Knocking noise from rear

Hi, I have a knocking noise which seems to be coming from the rear, possibly the left hand side but can't be to sure. Seems to get faster as I go faster but stops when I stop. It's not coming from the engine as it stops when I'm stationary and rev the engine although the sound is similar to the sound of a knocking engine. Any ideas before I take it to my indie. 1989 Turbo

More symptoms are required - there is quite a lot of moving metal at the back of a 944, so more details needed!

- When is the noise better or worse?
- When in one particular gear?
- When going 'round corners? (If so, left or right hand corners?)
- Does it go away when you put the brakes on gently? What about if you drive with the handbrake half-on?
- Does it go away when you are coasting in gear?
- Does it go away when coasting out of gear?
- Does it go away when going uphill/downhill/sideways/when you have Elton John on the stereo?
- Have you done any work on the car recently (changed brake parts / new tyres)?

First thing I would do is a quick inspection of the flange bolts at each end of both drive shafts.

They have a habit of coming loose or breaking, mainly happens when bolts are reused as you are supposed to use new ones.....I used threadlock on them and had no more problems.
