Knocking noise

My car is off to my OPC in the morning and is having its annual MOT amongst other things.

I have had a noise coming from the nearside - which started at around 10,000 miles but has never appeared when the car has gone in for its service or other work over the years. The car has just gone over 50,000 miles and is a 05 car.

The noise sounds like a 'clonking' from the glovebox and I presume it must be some sort of suspension bush or something. However the noise never sounds when you go over a pot hole in the road or when going from lock to lock. It mainly happens when I'm just driving along and then it would knock.

Has anyone an idea of what it could be?

It would be nice to have an idea of what it could be so I can point the guys to it if they cant find it straight away.
Thanks.

To be honest Dilllon, I've given up trying to diagnose suspension noises over the forum. Whatever I guess, it always sems to be something else. Here's my list of possibilities, and the sounds they usually make (to my ear):

Anti-roll bar drop links (rattle)
Anti roll bar bushes (clonk)
Anti-roll bar (clonk)
Lower wishbone ball joint (creak)
Lower wishboner bushes (clonk)
Forked control arm bushes (clonk)
Strut top mounts (doing - like a spring)
Strut top bearings (creak)
Shock absorber (clonk)

Sounds like the score for the intro to some TV programme called TOP GEAR ? ..... What about a bit of fun .... Who can record the best new tune using noises generated from their Porsche .... Could easily become a new No 1, .... Image

Just to add to Richard's list, I recently changed my antiroll bar bushes and it solved the clonk and creak although there is still a distant rattle there over bumps at low speeds. Interesting thing is I've changed everything esle as well so I'm resigned to the fact its going to stay.

Thank you. That gives me something to think about. I thought it was the bushes, so I guess this is where I will ask them to start.

I'm having the discs and pads changed all round and they are looking at the clutch (which was replaced in the summer, but has made a rather annoying 'moaning' sound every once in a while when I have used the car all day in traffic - followed by what can only be discribed as a 'burning smell'.)

So I hope the car will come back with no noise or smells (and a small bill [:)]!!)

Funny you should say that. They are the first verse of the lyrics of a new song I'm writing. The second verse is all about coolant tanks, caps, radiators, etc, and verse 3 is about alarm beeps, door locks, microswitches, and remotes. I am also working on the music. I have someone on lead PSE, a bass line on Cold Air Intake, and percussion by cold startup. [;)] [;)]

Glad to see that there is a sense of humour out there .... must have come from all those Porsche notes to which as apparent Porsche Guru you refer. ..

Sunshine today, Cabriolet going to let its hair down ... Image
