Kw v3 adjustment

The 944 I have just brought has a set of kw v3 coilovers on it. I have downloaded the kw instructions and they are very general.

Can someone give me a clue on how to adjust the rebound and compression. I can see some small Allen key holes, for example, on the top of the front struts, are these them?

On the gaz coil overs I had on a previous cars there were big knobs ( naughty......)to turn.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I have since found the correct instructions on the KW site specific for the 944. What I had found previously was just a general over view.

I have also found this on the 968 forum which, though is for the 968 CS I would imagine is relatively similar to the set up on my 944 as it runs CS anti roll bars.

Thanks

The rear shocks have to be removed to get to the top adjuster. I found an impact wrench handy for shifting the bottom bolts.

KW are very helpful with setup info (I presume you have the standard springs - I've gone harder on mine as it's not used much on the road)

My settings

Front Bump 1
Rear Bump 0.5

Front rebound 1
Rear rebound 1.5

Front springs 80N
Rear springs 70N

Standard S2 ARB's

It's a little loose, but does turn in nicely. -3 deg of front camber.

Yes standard kw springs. I intend having a look this weekend and seeing what they are currently set to.

Do you run any - camber at the rear?

Also, do you adjust for a wet track. Chatting to a guy who races 968's yesterday and he completely disconnects the arb's in really wet conditions.

No appreciable rear camber - probably 1deg or so. I cba to fiddle with arbs so just go slow in the wet [:D] I can see it would make sense though

I was told I had -4 deg at the rear from the place a brought the car, but I don't think it is as much as that.

I will get it checked sometime soon.

Thanks Mr Moots, hadn't seen the 968 set-up before, I shall have a play before Snetterton on April 12th.

BTW I run 2.5 D on front and 0 on rears with standard ARB's but with drop links fitted.

However I am using the Torsion bar springing in addition to the KW3's on the rear. Having re-indexed to ensure fully compressed helpers at rest.

It seems a good compromise so I don't have to play around lying in a wet paddock if it rains.

We seem to be more competitive in the wet so I think we're running a bit soft.

I just checked and i have -2deg rear camber. Bear in mind mine is a cheap track car & not an optimised race car.

Gerry - I'm sure you could do with stiffer springs in the dry. I bet Kevin @ EMC would tell you that. FWIW the KW clubsport springs are 90N F 50N R. I've seen posts on rennlist that gives you the formulae for working out effective spring rates (plus the rear TB).

I believe the standard KW springs are 60N F 50N R (according to Dave Walsh)

Yup you're right 60N F 50N R

I know Kevin say's I should sell the KW's and put some better struts on, however when I bought the car (A stock road car with MOT!) The guy had just bought the KW3's (Invoice from Promax was 2 weeks old) and they were in with deal, so being ignorant and knowing absolutely zilch about 944's (apart from owning one back in 1989 as my road car for 2 years), I ran with them.

It was all very new to me I'd been racing Caterhams for 20 years, so I was just happy to get race ready in 10 days. I bought it as road car on 20th April and raced it at Brands Hatch the first week of May!

So it's not really a Race Honed machine and I'm still carting round about 200Kg more than Anthony!

Kevin would encourage me to loose the torsion bar springing and stiffen up both sets, but I might just go for stiffer springs on the front.

If anyone has any ideas about that?

I've got some 80N springs on the shelf if you want to try them. They are a bit longer (200mm IIRC) so the spring perches need to be wound down a bit.

Working with the KW's is such a pleasure though as there's no corrosion to worry about.

Sure

I'm often working from home during the week. We're just off the A38 - DE22 1AX

OK Ed, I will contact you when I get get back to the UK. I'm at my house in France atm , due back later in March.

I find the government £200 winter fuel allowance goes much further here [:D]

Thanks Ed.
