KW V3: uprated rear springs?

Guest

New member
Hi guys,

Has anybody changed the rear springs on their rear V3 dampers? I'm attempting to do this, and I'm not sure if the top mounting eye comes off the shock shaft.

Thank you for any assistance,
Travis

Travis, there's a guy called Big Dave who has changed out his springs in V3's to heavier ones so he should be along at some stage. Otherwise try him or someone at http://www.porsche968uk.co.uk/phpbb/index.php
Patrick

Thanks Patrick!

I installed the fronts tonight and have been driving ever since (it's about 0200 now). They are simply amazing! I'm running them just as they came out of the box and haven't changed any of the settings.

The car is so flat, yet rides so good, there has to be a catch. They are especially good under hard cornering on bumpy or uneven surfaces. I'm actually glad I did just the fronts, as I can get a better appreciation of the differences.

Hopefully Dave can tell me how to swap the rear springs so I can get the full effect.

Well, I better get some sleep!

Travis.
Yes the rear shocks do come apart...I fitted stronger springs to mine, BUT it was about 18 months ago...

If my memory serves me correct, the bottom mount cant come off because the offset bottom eye bolt is in the way, so the top eyelet must have unscrewed...It was tight though....

Have fun...

Dave,

Thank you for the reply! That's the reassurance I was looking for. I didn't want to screw them up.

Much appreciated!
Travis

Dave,

Wow, they are tight! Do you recall what you used to hold the shock shaft? I know it's been a while, but if you could recall any tricks, I 'd appreciate it!

Thanks,
Travis

I see to think i wound the spring seat as low as poss. Then i put the shaft in a vice making sure it was wrapped in a rag to protet the piston . And then prayed....

Thanks Dave, that did it!

I forgot the praying part though and broke the first vice. [] Bought a 50lb Craftsman and heated up the threads, gave it my all, and it came loose. They use some super-duper thread lock on them!

Thank you so much for the help, Patrick and Dave!
Travis

Glad you manage to do the job...

PS what rate springs did you fit to the rears.?? In presuming you upped the fronts acordingly aswell.??

Dave- I'm using 500lb springs on the rear with deleted torsion bars. The fronts I kept stock.

Thank you for the help in getting these dissassembled!

Wow thats stiff springs.. But then again youve removed the T bars.

The KW,s you have , Have they been custom made to run with a T bar removed.??
I only ask the ??? as the valving in the KW is made to be used with the T bars still in place. If you then remove the T bars + fit stiffer springs to compensate, youl put the shocks under a different loading + poss wear out the internal valving , as they are working harder...

Oh Dave and all, Travis neglected to mention a little something different under his hood...Corvette LS2 motor! It seems like it gets along mighty fine. [:D]

Dave, if I wasn't so hell bent on keeping something remotly Porsche under my hood, I would look to this conversion for sure. From all the US guys who have done it they all rave. Again, check out Rennlist. There's even some video of Tony G in his car on a track in a thread at the moment. Looks like fun to me. Plenty of tq, no need to change gears as often. Just not a Porsche but some can get over that. I sometimes wish I could...[]

Well, I want to THANK Patrick again for the KW recommendation. Another day with the setup and I love them even more! They have transformed my car.

I see what you mean about the rates Dave, and I had the same concerns. The KW engineers approved the setup though. So in the end I took the chance. It's tough to order anything besides the V3's in the U.S.

Travis, you're very welcome. I'm just passing on what I learnt at this site.
Looking at your engine it seems that it has a lower center of gravity than the i4 motor and I believe the weight is actually very similar?
I actuallly tried to post the same pictures that you have of your beast but they were too large. You must have reduced them? Cool pics.

Agree about the pics, one of my all time favourite wheel designs for Porsche cars and like me no rubbing strips on the sides of the car. Lovely

Travis. Thats a SWEET looking car...
I was going to ask about the LS2 conversion, but thennoticed it was a LHD.. Not too sure if it would work in a RHD....

Thank you so much for the compliments, gentlemen! It took me years to get use to the idea of a GM in a Porsche. I was fortunate to test drive a 924S with a stock LS1 in it, and sort of had so much fun, that I forgot who manufactured the lump!

Wow, great eye, it is lower than the i4. Weight is really close to the 2.5 8v turbo and I/C combo. The LS2 gets a little lighter by removing the Vette cast-iron exhaust manifolds, and using headers in their place.

RHD and V8 fitment.....that's got me wondering if it would work!

Thanks guys.
