Lakes District / Yorkshire Dales

Hi All,

I am heading up to the Lakes District this weekend for a few days and was just wondering if there are any "must do" driving roads etc up that way that others have done and can recommend.

Some brief research has highlighted Buttertubs Pass, the B6255 (Hawes to Singleton) and A684 (which supposedly runs from Lakes District to Y Dales)

I plan to just cruise around up there but some of these roads look perfectly suited to 944's so I dont want to miss anything while I am up there and then lament the fact when I return.

Rgds,

Hard Knott and Wrynose Passes are difficult but worth the effort.

Another great route is the A6 from Kendal to Penrith as nearly all the traffic is on the M6.

Leave M6 JCT 36 call in at Porsche Centre Kendal (Nice People) drive to Windermere and Keswick up Dunmail Raise, if you are near the A66 watch out for a Black Skoda Octavia VRS and a 55 plate Mondeo ST amonst others....................Traffic Plod !
They also knock about in a new Subaru STI but that is covered in go faster day glo go faster stripes so you will see it.
Nice roads from Penrith to Alston and the old A6 up to Carlisle.
Enjoy my county !

Ha ha I like your style. I try to build up an undercover database in my head too.

J18-21 M6 (on the way up) look out for Silver BMW 3series number plate ending in 'EXE' often seen pulling people over on my way to Liverpool each week. Other common one in the same area is an X3 or X5 only saw it once and didn't get the plate.

Yeah, plod. Big fly in the ointment when trying to make decent progress.

I know the area tolerably well as my family have an estate up there. Hard Knott and Wrynose are both well worth the travel, but watch out for the red mist as they are both very testing roads. However, just leaving the M6 at Jcn 36 and following your nose will keep you amused for several days.

Two points to note. Don't go there in holiday season. Idiots in euro-bimble-boxes will keep your maximum speed below 20mph and you won't enjoy it. And plod increase their efforts markedly during grockle season. Also, take care generally; the roads are often bordered by dry stone walls which make a BIG mess of the shiny bits if you overcook it, and sheep are allowed to roam freely over many of the roads as well (and you don't want to hit one of them - trust me.)

If you are really getting serious then think hard about making a bit more of a journey and getting to Scotland. The roads are better, there are more of them, there are a LOT fewer people and plod don't give a damn. Given you are starting from London, it's not *that* much further, and worth the extra effort.

Oli.
