Laser / Radar detectors

Hello... probably been asked a thousand times before but just for the sake of up to date information... does anyone use a radar/laser detector that's very good at detecting those mobile police vans on the side of motorways or above on those bridges as I do a lot of motorway driving? Not interested in Laser jammers as I dont want to go to jail but as laser/radar detectors are not illegal I guess i'll go for one of those. No wise cracks about "dont speed will be cheaper" please as everyone does it - just want to be a little more safe in doing so at times when the road conditions permit.

Beltronics RX65, Snooper 3Zero, Road Angel Gem+, Pogo Alert+... heard these names around a lot...?

I guess im interested in learning about whether someone already owns a device they swear by and has helped them avoid getting done.

Many thanks

Pogo Alert+ no longer available. The screen was almost unreadable but database seemed better than a Garmin Navi's database

Road Angel Gem+ I have had this for 6 months as free out of warranty replacement for failed Pogo Alert+ and have yet to be scanned by a mobile so hope it works but not actually demonstrated

I had a Bel Euro 550 that beeped at everything despite being set for "City" and set to exclude a number of door opener/garage forecourt frequencies so never really trusted it.

Trouble in evaluating these systems is unless you are passing regularly through known active mobile speed camera areas you'll never know whether your device is detecting the mobiles; for fixed cameras I would trust Road Angel

I recently bought a Road Angel Gem+, primarily because its database does not need to be updated from a PC, (that is only used when the firmware needs to be updated) instead it uses the cellular network to update using GPRS data transfer via a built in SIM .
The device also has it's own internal battery so can be used without being plugged into a 12v outlet for about 3 to 4 hours. It can be a bit annoying in that warnings for safety camera van locations will happen even though a van is not there because it is based on that's where a van has been known to be located. As for it's laser detection no experience yet but if it detects one then your car has also been targeted so if you are over the limit it's too late.

Just download Tom Tom speed camera app for my iphone. Seems to do the job fine and FREE!

The TomTom app is free but subscription is required for database updates plus I have found their current subscribed sites are less extensive than the Road Angel.

Driving penalty points free seems to have a certain randomness about it these days.

CameraAlert on iPhone and if you use a Tune2Air BT adapter it will send the alerts via the PCM audio.
