Lazy temp gauge

Hi All

My temp gauge often needs a little kick start to get moving, either that or go over a few bumps! Flicking the dash pod acts as a kick start. Odd, so i thought I would change the gauge. My other gauge does the same. Next I cleaned up the little contact prongs at the back, no change, swapped them out, no change.

Right then, next step was change over the binnacle itself in case of suspect circuit board. Still the same!!

Could I have two gauges with the same affliction? Has anyone else experienced this? It has to be something in or very near the gauge for the flick to act as a kick start but everything has been swapped over?

Hmmmm

Edit to add once the gauge starts working it is faultless.

Stuart,
I had 2 independent gauges not work. My original one would hop up and down between normal and hot. It was far too quick to be an actual temp fluctuation and like you a quick flick to the dash and it would drop down.
I acquired another and whilst better it wasn't right. Had the actual cooling system checked, new sender etc and found that the temp with an infra red gauge was fine and lower than the gauge. Cleaned them all as you have but in the end I had another from Alasdair and all is well 2 years later.
Not much help to you but it does happen. I think OPC wanted £200 for a new gauge (temp and fuel). Err no.

Cheers David. Will get another gauge from Alasdair and see how that goes. Weird that they both do exactly the same thing but it really has to be the gauge I think and they do go faulty it would seem (I also had one that fluctuated like your other one) so not beyond the realms of possibility that they both have the same fault! Does make me really unlucky with temp gauges though as this will be temp gauge #4 coming up!

if you strip down the gauges you will find there are (from memory) two solder pads which keep the back board of the temp (and fuel or oil pressure) gauge backings square to the needle, often the solder degrades making the backing at a slight angle, push down on the backing and re-solder, then re-assemble and install... usually this sorts it out
