Anyone else going to Le Mans this year? This will be my first trip. I've booked a place as recommended by PCGB on the Porsche Curves. Going for the whole weekend. Anyone have any useful tips on the trip down, places to go, things not to miss, food & drink at the site etc, etc?

I'm going this year as well - can't give any advice as this is my 1st year wth pcgb been 4 times before though - looking forward to it - am going on the Thursday then making a weeks holiday of it afterwards
See you there

No - going on the Chunnel - last time we did the chunnel it was graet with all the Brit sportscars at the terminal. 4 pensioners in a Daewoo in front of us going for a day trip to Calais for the first time couldn't understand what was happening. " Is it always like this they asked us?" !!! Guess which car got stopped by the customs?

Don't miss night practice on Thursday night, anywhere on the circuit, grandstands are free that night all of them except the ACO grandstand (tribune) finishes at midnight. Friday all day visit the pit lane to see the cars on display or being worked upon, and drivers (sometimes). Friday evening there is a parade of drivers in the Le Mans city centre, always packed go early. Visit the village of Arnage sometime over the weekend to soak up the atmosphere, plenty of places to eat and drink, watch out for the Police breathalysers, (on the spot fines) don't drink and drive. It is often very hot over the weekend, drink plenty of water. Don't expect to get a lot of sleep as the firework displays are quite spectacular in the campsites. but most of all ENJOY ! there is nothing like it anywhere in the world. See you there, our 20th visit will be this year.

I ( we ) are going, from Wednesday to Monday... For any that have not been before, its a great event. The only thing I say is check out this site, its great for all the first-timers and anyone else come to that

The only problem is I just sold my Porsche so need to get some new wheels before I go !!!

I think I read somewhere that it was possible to drive the circuit on the Friday late pm or sometime in convoy, Does anyone know if this is correct or is it just whistfull thinking on my part?

You can drive the public road parts of the circuit anytime (that the track is not closed for the race functions).
Basically up to mid afternoon Wednesday (closes for Qualifying 1), Same Thursday (same reason) and all day Friday. The Circuit is then closed from about 2AM on Saturday morning for the race.

It is great fun and I encourage you to do it... BUT
If you are planning to do it, I would advise doing so as early in the week as possible. It gets a bit stupid on Friday - and you get all sorts of silly burnouts, people squirting you with water cannon (great in your convertible) and those that forget it's a public road - with trucks etc coming the opposite way.

A few years back there was a spate of people (mostly bikers) being killed on "Mad Friday". Best to stay out of it.

Thanks for the info everyone, especially Robin. It seems like a great few days. Ref the Porsche camp site, I've heard that the cars are packed into the site. Is it possible to drive in and out? - Esential if I want to see the parade on the Friday.
Anyone camp there last year?

I camped there last year and will be again this year..
Yes the cars were in the campsite, right next to your tent [:)].
It was quite easy (with care) to get in and out of the camp site with your cars, ideal for the supermarket runs and the Friday mayhem.

Friday was a great day, the pitlanes, the fun on and around the site and the drivers parade.. Don't think it was worth struggling back from the town after the parade for the BBQ, but thats just a personal opinion..

Can you comment on the quality of the food on offer at the Porsche camp site?
I've been told it might be an idea to join the Speed Chills club as they apparently serve reasonable food & beer. Membership seems to cost around £20, which is OK but only if the food at the Porsche camp site isn't up to much.
What are your thoughts on food & drink?

The food at the Porsche camp site was fair/good, considering it was at a camp site on the side of a racetrack I had a sunday roast which was amazing under the circumstances a full breakfast every morning which was great...along with copious amounts of tea and coffee...
It was a hard year for catering last year as the weather was so hot, the fridge engine overheated, they ran out of cold water and beers towards the end of the weekend, but people possibly drank more(water) due to the weather.. they tried really hard.
Prices of the food and drink was priced fairly (in euros), small stubby bottles were more expensive than what you could buy them for at the supermarkets, but it was cold beer which was worth every extra penny. Very friendly and helpfull people from our experience.
Part of our reason to return with PCGB was because the catering was to that standard.. (but only part..[;)])
The Friday night BBQ is include in the PCGB package, but I've already posted my views on that...

GaryW,
Thanks for the info. I think I'll give SpeedChills a miss and stick with the Porsche catering. One more question, whilst I'm going for the race, I understand there will be some key World Cup football matches being played in Germany over the weekend. Was there a TV on the Porsche camp site?
Thanks again,

Qwest

Large screen TV, sadly we watched the start of the race on it last year.... unable to walk that far in the heat and traffic... or just unable to walk [;)]

GaryW,
See you there !
I'll be the one drinking a cold beer whilst eating a beef sandwich and watchng England thrash Germany on the TV ! (fat chance)
