Leak from gear selector

Hi

Hope everyone has had a good Christmas break. Best wishes to all for the coming year.

Just had a mot and the very friendly inspector showed me the underside of the car. It had what appears to be a leak from gear selector. The car is a tiptronic. I've not experienced any jerking or snatching of gears. A few questions:

- is it likely to be the gear selector lever
- if not, what could it be
- likely cost to repair, 10s , 100s or grand
- can I continue to drive it

Thanks
Shahid

There is a seal on the selector shaft, which could be the culprit. The seal is £3.35+VAT, but I have no idea how difficult it is to change.

It depends on how badly it is leaking. If it is just a weep, then it should be fine to use until you can get it looked at.

Shahid,

I bought a 996TT Tip before Xmas knowing it had a minor selector shaft seal leak. It has gone from a weep to several drips very quickly, to the extent that I've taken it off the road, the car is languishing at a local Porsche specialist (Martin Brown / PorscheTech Meriden)

The issue is the seal around the mechanical gear linkage into the box, the problem is that Porsche do not service this particular seal, so Martin and I are trying to source the seal between us. (Porsche will tell you it's a new gearbox needed...) It is the Daimler Chrysler A96/50 box on my car and we believe that the seal can be sourced through Mercedes (almost the same as the 722.6 box) , however we're struggling to find whether the box was used in a '996' installation in any UK Mercedes so that we can order the seal and be sure it's the right one.

The repair involves valve gear removal, Martin thinks he can do this without dropping the box but as he hasn't started the job yet I can't be sure.

Will let you know when the bills start rollling in...however we're still investigating!

I had gasket leaks on the Tip box in my Turbo. My indy ended up stripping it down and using a Merc 722.6 gasket set. I think it was used in the ML320, from memory. One of the gaskets he just couldn't source, as it is Porsche specific, and ended up making one. I have a parts list for the 722.6. If you would like a copy, drop me an email.
