Leaking fuel pipes

Guest

My 944 is leaking fuel from corroded pipes near the left rear wheel, solutions appear to be new pipes at £250-£280 plus fitting, replacing with flexible hose well overlapped with double jubilees at both ends but if this does let go then petrol on a hot exhaust could be nasty, or removing pipes and silver soldering copper pipe in place of the corroded sections.
Any advice as to the cheapest safe solution would be appreciated.
Thanks Derek

I had this problem on my 924. Both the pipes are 10 mm od so I invested in some 10mm compression fittings and sourced (who said half inched) some 10mm soft copper pipe, and cut out the rusty section and put in the copper with a compression joint each end. Properly cleaned up the steel pipe will seal but you need to heave on the compression joint nuts to get a good seal.

If you go this way don't be tempted to uncoil the copper prior to refoming it over the axle beam or it will quickly work harden. If copper pipe is good enough to relpace brake pipes then using it for the fuel pipes ought to be an advantage too, from a corrosion point of view. Secondly, I question the wisdom of replacing a metal pipe with a flexible pipe of any description, due to the vulnerability of the underside of the car.
