Leaking Petrol Tank!

Anil

New member
Hi All

Just found a nice big puddle of petrol under the car this morning. []

I' ve managed to have a quick look underneath and it appears to be leaking (maybe a drop every 5 secs...) from the centre of the tank where the underseal seems to have come away. I' m not sure if it has been struck by a small rock or if its due to rust.

Anyway, I just wanted to know if anyone else has encountered any problems with their petrol tank and what are my options. Does it need a new tank or can it be repaired, and if so ,by who? A bodyshop maybe?

Cheers

Anil

P.S I only filled up the tank on Friday...Doh !

Hi I posted this on the 28/4 see thread

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just found my fuel tank leaking.
Been recommended by Simon @ Porsch-Part to try a company that will repair the tank and will give a life times guarantee.
Is there something wrong with the design because when I had taken the tank to this company there and behold thay had two more in, Thay said that thay repair minimum of one a week same place on all, or am I missing the point on a old car 1989 3.2 carrera.
Well gentleman just to be on the safe side I think you should check your fuel tank

Graham

Thanks for the quick response. I should have done a quick search first !

Glad to know that I' m not the only one who has suffered this problem.

Do most specialists suggest that it is relatively safe to ' patch' the tank or is it better to buy a new one? I' m guessing the price of a new tank is going to be quite spectacular ![:(]

Cheers

Anil

You chose, over £1000 for a new one or get yours repaired for about £200 with a life times guarantee.[:D]
It`s fairly easy if you have a bit of diy knowledge hard bit is finding some where for the fuel to go[8|]
If you need any help just email me

Hi Anil - mine had had a similar problem - before I bought it fortunately! - and the only apparent solution was a new tank - not cheap I saw from the invoice!. However, have seen some comment on the forum a few weeks ago about this problem, which seemed to suggest a problem around the seam. Seem to recollect someone suggested that they could be repaired, and that to take the tank out wasn' t a real probem.

Might be worth looking back over some of the older posts to see if you can pick up this thread

This stuff WORKS
I have been using POR15 on my 911, and it is really as good as it seems.
If you want second opinion, see conversations on rennlist. (thats how I found it)
You can buy from Frost here in UK.
Do your self a favour....even if its only temporary.
OH, and by the way....
metho in the tank will remove water.... but I' ve said that before.[]....

Petro Patch. Top recommendation, same component chemistry as mentioend by Peter.... Solved all my problems with my Cortina Mk2. (what on earth is that ?)

Steve

Thanks for all the responses.

I took the car down to Steve Bull in Devizes who put it up on the ramp so that we could have a pretty good look. It appears that the underseal haev come adrift allowing water to creep underneath and rust the whole bottom of the tank.

He recommended I take the tank to Arrow Radiators in Melksham who perform the RE-NU process to restore the tank for about 200+VAT. This may be similar to what Graham mentioned above. They also offer a liftime warranty on the work.

See http://www.arrowrad.co.uk/Fuel%20tanks%20RENU.htm

Hopefully I' ll take the tank in sometime this week.

Cheers

Anil

P.S Steve, I used to have a 1.6 De-luxe not long ago !![;)]

Anil
Yes it is the same process, But I`am in the N/east so had a local firm do it.
But Its the same Warrenty from Re-Nu
