Leaking rear shock ..

Just loving my 993 C4S that I collected on Monday. A full service at a reputable IPC has revealed a 'weeping' rear shock absorber.

Question is whether I replace what appears to be the pair of original rear shock absorbers or put in a replacement system with new springs and shock absorbers.

The car was originally supplied with a factory fitted lowered suspension, possibly code 303 ?
 
Depends on the mileage and state of the other shocks. If you have lowered springs and you're happy with them then I'd stick with those and only worry about the shock(s).

There have been lots of posts about suspension that you might find helpful - for example search on 'suspension'.

M033 is lowered, sprigs will be fine, shocks fecked, Bilstein or FSD seem to be flavour at the mo.
 
M033 was standard on the RoW C4S.
Keep the springs and swap the shocks with Koni FSD for comfort or Bilstein B8 if you like it a bit sportier.

I believe other shocks are fine.
Mileage is 62,000.

I like to know all my options before deciding, but I was not given much choice.

The IPC suggested the same shocks as originally supplied in 1998, and they're quoting £ 1000 fitted. They're being fitted on Monday.

Why did you bother asking for advice when it appears you had already made up your mind? Standard Monroe shocks are generally accepted as being a poor second to modern shocks from Bilstein, Koni, etc. I would also suggest that a grand seems a bit dear for replacing two shocks.

 
I will explain why I asked for advice, for which I am grateful for the feedback.

I was informed mid morning Friday that a shock absorber was weeping. When I collected the car on Friday afternoon, I was not given many options,
other than the replacement of the rear pair. I need the work being down by Tuesday at the latest.

I knew there was quite a lot of information on the PCGB forums, and I've been reading as much as I can, and the very useful feedback from other members
does vary.

I've now lost a little confidence in the IPC, and am now unsure what to do. Sadly, I don't think I've been given 'best advice'.

Rather a shock reading your message .. what would be a more realistic price for a pair of shocks ?

To buy around £400 for the pair (that is for Bilstein). Fitting would be extra but not a major job in terms of time.

Monroe were std figment. (Occasionally Boge) so nothing exotic.

If you can spanner yourself then it's possible to swap all 4 for £1k, probably worth a geometry check on top (that would be Bilstein).

If it's only one weeping just now there's probably no rush, unless it looks like it's been weeping for a while. I would suggest giving yourself a bit of time to look into it thoroughly. That way you appreciate the new shocks all the more :)
 
Just had FSDs fitted with M033 springs. I'm not so sure they are the be all and end all.
 
Monroes are £240 each, Bilstein £165 each but you would want to do the 4 so £820 a set, Car would need a geo after 2 rears fitted so say 5 hours labour in all?

Bilsteinn PSS10's are probably thought of as the best option, big bucks though!
 
Cheers .. It does seem daft replacing a pair of Monroes at the rear, when they are more expensive and from what I have read, a lesser quality. Leaving the front to possibly start failing at a later date, requiring me to buy another pair of Monroes for the front. I think I would rather spend more now, on a better 'all round' set that are replaced at the same time.
 
Your front shocks will almost certainly be well past their best too. Don't consider replacing just the rears with a different brand though - go Monroes on the back (if you must) or better, go with Bilstein or Koni all round if you can.

What makes you say that? Who fitted them? I kept the original (non-lowered) springs and had the FSDs fitted and GEO set up by Center Gravity - it completely transformed the car - also took opportunity to replace a few worn suspension parts.

Just did the Anglesey track day and the car felt amazingly balanced even though I must have put on about 10K miles since the FSDs were fitted.
