Leaky Boxster

Gentlemen and Ladies,

I have a 2000 Boxster which has been a dream of a car to own with little or indeed no problems... Touch (Head) Wood. Until now that is!

I have a leak on the passenger side that collects water behind the passenger seat, I have checked that the drain tubes in the rear compartment are clear and working ok and did actually extract a bolt from this side with the hoover.

I have used an aqua vac and sucked up all of the water until the carpet was touch dry and then a few days later the water is back again. When you pusch your finger into the carpet you can see the water. It is clear water with no odour or colour.

Any ideas as where it might be comming from and suggestion on cleaning any other drain like tubes or whatever??

Appreciate any help you could offer and welcome any suggestions, thank god the summer is just around the next but after the next corner!

One area you really need to be dry is under the passenger seat ...
The main control unit is under thenre, and if it get's waterlogged, you are generally looking at the cost of a new one[&:]

You've checked the drain tubes (did you actually pour water through them? They might still be blocked).

Otherwise how about the door? Is the carpet wet at the bottom of the door? This is likely to be the plastic membrane in the door being damaged.
A new one isn't expensive if so.

Mark,

The brain alarm unit is under the passenger seat!!!! Ouch. Thanks for the reply and the answer is yes! I have checked the drain holes with the roof half open and have run a hose to make sure they are working ok and the water pours out of the bottom of the car.

I wanted to know if any other drain systems could be blocked that may cause this problem. The carpet is only wet in the middle of the space behind the passenger seat. I can not see or feel if it has come down from the back or the side as all appears to be dry.

I think it is rain water getting in but I can figure out how, any ideas would be much appreciated...

And again thanks for your help Mark.

Regards

Dean

Hello

just a thought is the air con drain clear ? as this is on passanger side and the carpet is like a sponge so it could be coming from anywhere on that side....have you checked that the rear membranes are not punctured/split ?

Dean,

My car is same model year as yours and mine has a leak somewhere on the passenger side too. I too cleared the drain holes hoping that was the problem, but to no avail.

After many hours searching I found that the side vent wasnt fitted properly. I removed the side vent and used some clear silicone sealant to seal the black plastic grille to the coloured plastic surround.

That seems to have stopped 95% of the water coming in. There is still a slight leak but massively reduced.

My quest continues .....

Good luck with yours!

You should get hold of workshop CD. There are 3 main drain channels on each side of the Boxster (if I remember correctly) that need to be checked as part of the service. when I bought mine all three were partialy blocked. They are situated: front scuttle (where battery is - middle and either side), rear x two, in the drain channel which the hood cover lifts from. These should be clear. Then finaly the door membranes - nearly always leak and need to be replaced on older vehicles.

Hi
I had exactly the same problem a few years ago and after doing all of the usual procedures as already mentioned it was found that the foam membrane liner that runs around the bottom of the roof had the smallest hole in it. It was repaired under warranty so I couldn't tell you how much it would cost. Worth a look though.

It looks like the hood has to come off or be loosened at the pivot to change the foam liner tray. I've always been a bit apprehensive because of this. Has anyone changed the liner tray themselves?

I was about to post on the same issue. My 2000 Boxster is also leaking and the water is collecting behind the rear passenger seat. If you get to the bottom of the problem, I would be delighted to hear from you.

Thanks

Paul

I had the same problem on the drivers side. I found this to be coming from a small hole under the drivers seat which was there as a result of a broken stud. The stud is used to fasten the plastic under tray to the bottom of the car and somehow had become detached so the tray was flapping at one corner.

I took the drivers seat out and shone a torch through the hole and I couldn't beleive my eyes when the light appeared under the car. I have blocked the hole temporarily for now until I can get it up on a lift for proper fix but it seems to have done the trick in terms of the dreaded water ingress.

Hope this helps.

Check the condition of the foam gutter trays under the clamsheel - event he slightest porosity in these will result in water ingress - they can be repired with boat silicone sealant, but by the time you mess about its probably as easy to get a new one from the OPC. Just make sure its sealed/adhered properly too.
