LEAKY SPEEDLINE ALLOY

The offside front Speedline has started to leak. It was fine when fitted in the spring. Dunking it in the bath when no one else was looking has revealed a leak from the rim to wheel centre seal on the exterior face for a short section between bolts 10 - 14 inclusive (anticlock from valve).

I propose to check how tight the split rim bolts are, but would appreciated info on the correct torque setting and also what the correct type of socket is required for the external bolt heads.

Any advice would be appreciated - including the name of a suitable specialist to overhaul the wheel, if that is the best approach.

Happy new year to you all.[FONT=Arial"][FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Kym,

This can be fairly easy to sort your self....the leak isn't normally due to the bolts being lose, but the seal between the sections of the wheel.

If you remove the tyre, you will see a "U" section of the wheel where the tyre sits on the shoulders of the U. This is made up of an inner and outer part of the split rim.

The outer section is 25% and the inner 75% approximately, there is normally a rubberised seal between these 2 that can break down and leak.

Once you have the wheel apart, clean around this join and once dry, apply a heavy duty silicon sealant over the join between the 2 sections. Allow to dry for 24 hours and then repeat the process for good measure.

I have done this a couple of times to leaky Speedlines over the years and it has been totally successful, years later, you will only know if it has worked once the tyre has been re-fitted.

All the best for 2011...it would be good to see you and the RS at future Kent meets, there have been 3 regular 993RS in recent snow free months.

Silver7 should be able assist with feedback as he is the Imelda Marcos of Porsche wheels and all things Speedline.

Melv, Adrian is great, and lovely to deal with. He takes a little time but who can complain when you see the quality of the final job ?

But, when I refurbed a set of wheels and needed a new seal (one was missing completely !) I had to buy the seal from FbV Brombacher ??? in Germany.

They were very good, but £50 ish for the seal alone ?

Paul is correct that his seal will work (it did), but it's not original.

Maybe I am a little too willing to spend, but I am always very happy to see that these parts are still available ....

Maybe one day, they will not be ....

Melv...literally....garages full!

Chris....the "original" seal is often the thing that breaks down over time,,,,so as it cannot be seen unless you remove the tyre and take the wheel apart
you would never know if it was present or not. My seal wasn't too bad, I used the silcone sealant over it like a hylomar type gasket jointing to improve the seal......so is the shock of living with a non factory sealed wheel, easier to come to terms with the fact it will not leak and safer to use?

Definitely the fact that it will not leak --- I had no seal to repair !! [:D][:D]

Guys if u start taking 3 piece apart .....check u get the torque on those bolts correct for reassembly and IMO neber use themmore than twice ..............i believ the expression is necking .........first time one torque , second time different torque BEWARE

Once again - thank you all for your advice - and thanks Paul for the detailed reply. All points are noted and I will let you know how it goes.

The RS continues to drive really well and fortunately I have a spare Cargraphic alloy with matching tyre for continued (non salty) use, whilst this problem is resolved.

I hope to see you next year! All the best.
