Leaky Targa

My '73 Targa lets water in after a short shower with the wind in the appropriate direction, appearing under the carpet in the footwell behind the passenger seat. How does it get in, and is there a drainage tube somewhere which is blocked ? Grateful for help. Early 911 rust problems cause sleepless nights ! Colin Palmer

Hi Colin . . .

No expert on Targa's . . . . other than to say leaks are pretty common.

Don't think there's a drain tube . . . probably need to replace the rubbers (alternative being to spend hours with a bucket trying to find the source)

On my '78 SC there are two drain pipes fitted in the Targa bar seals they empty out of the inner rear arches below the bar, I don't know if this is the case with earlier models. One tried and tested way to observe leaks is to sit in the car while using a power washer, get a friend to give it a long soak and see where the water is coming in, concentrate the spray in one area for a short while and then move around till you spot something.

Also make sure that the metal gutters that run along the edges of the top itself have not bent in at their ends (easily done if resting the side of the top on the floor when you fold it) as this will channel water into the cabin via the verticle targa bar seal.

Thanks for all the helpful advice. Process of exclusion seems to be the way forward. I have washed the car with a hose after blanking off the vents in the Targa bar with adhesive tape -- result ---no ingress of water. It's a start, but doesn't point to a remedy !

There are drains from the targa bar into the rear wings if you have a rear wheel off you can see a squashed pipe at the top front about an inch long you could try cleaning out with a pice of wire. The roll hoops also rust but you will have to remove the top cover to see. regards Berny
