Leaky Wheel Rims

Found I had a flat tyre (drivers side front) last night. Re-inflated from zero to 36 psi and checked back this morning and it was still showing 36 psi. Thought I'd take it to my local tyre depot anyway for possible puncture repair but it turns out the tyre isn't sealing against the inner wheel rim. Tyre man suggested a re-furb should cure it. Any opinions?

This is annoying as, when bought, the car was advertised as having had wheels re-furbished, now it seems they just painted them.

I'd be amazed if the wheels were in such bad condition from 03 that they won't seal a tyre.
I've had decidedly rusty rims (for the old rangie) just cleaned with a wire brush before mounting the tyre and they have been fine. A couple of times they did need reseating.
Did they deflate, turn the tyre and reseat
 
Wheel did look crappy on inside rim and could see bubbling from around seat when tyre fitter tested with soapy water. Its away being repaired now for the princely sum of £72 and no guarantee that it won't happen again! Don't fancy the prospect of a sudden deflation on a cold winters morning in the wilds of Shropshire.

Funny, every year we have some sort of tyre drama close to Christmas. One time my wife ran over some boy racer's exhaust back box that dropped off in front her. Cost us a wheel and tyre for a Focus on Christmas eve.
 
My local tyre place took the tyre of mine and ran a grinder very lightly over the inside rim. And then popped the tyre and sealed it perfectly. Take it to another tyre place or pm me if you're not too far from west London. Thx Roy
 
Id have told him to try harder and not look at the badge on the front of the car cheeky git.

Did he fit the tyre originally?

Surprised he didn't try to sell you nitrogen to put in the tyres instead of air!.
My brother in law fell for that one! he drives a Passat.

Made me largh to think there was a Passat driving round with nitrogen filled tyres!.
Maybe he had lost his way to Daytona.

What you have is a 'rim seal' corrossion issue. (I run a wheel refurb business in Belfast).
You can commonly get a corrossion between the tyre and the wheel, I can happen on all cars from quite an early age too.
Your wheel refurb was probably limited to the front face of the wheel which is common from car sales outlets.
Your rim seal issue is repairable without refinishing the rest of the wheel, Tyre off, remove all corrossion /paint from under tyre , re prime & paint, refit tyre, rebalance.
Caution as your other 3 wheels are probably in a similar condition.

Job done!

Picked it up this afternoon from Chips Away/Ace Car Care in Shrewsbury. They removed the tyre, ground back both inner and outer rim and then 2 pack paint refinish. Refitted tyre and re-balance. Reckoned corrosion was quite bad but said they had seen worse on younger cars. I can see the new paint on the inner face but not on the outer, must be a good match.

Happy with it so far but obviously too early to tell. Fitted to car and set pressure to 36 psi, will re-check in the morning and then go for a spin.

Yes, I will think about the other 3 wheels in the new year when my wallet has stopped haemorrhageing good cheer. Maybe go for full re-furb if I decide not to have the Quattro's Ronals done.
