LED bulb replacement

I run 10W bulbs in my tail lights even though the car came with 5W bulbs, which I believe were standard. I was never impressed with the brightness of the 5's and mainly as a point of safety changed them for 10's. However, I have read that the heat from the 10W bulbs may eventually melt the plastic housings. Not sure how true this is.

Anyway, a colleague at work has just ordered some LED units for his Lexus, which would seem the perfect solution, i.e. bright but with little or zero heat dissipation. Has anyone else tried this on our cars?

Oh, and the web site that my colleague used was http://www.ultraleds.co.uk.

This is something I've been considering for sometime - do you need to change the fuses as well or simply just swap the bulbs?

Cheers

I've been runing 10W rears for nearly a year now in both 944's without any problems.

Conversely, you will waste your money with led lamps for this application as the light source is far too directional.

Rick tipped me off about the 10w upgrade at Husborne in October. I turned out I actuallt had a 5w in one side and a 10w in the other [:(], but the 10w must have been in there for years so I wouldn't worry.

Rick, take your point about LEDs being directional. I guess that modern cars using LEDs use a specially designed diffuser on the light unit. If other people have used 10s for some time without problems then maybe I'll just stick with them.......
