LED side lights

I'm currently using single LED side lights (next to the fogs) to match the colour of my HID headlights. These LED 'bulbs' were specifically purchased as they were advertised as converted to properly work on a 993 - and they do. However, I've just bought a 5 LED 'bulb' from another supplier (also advertising 993 fitment) with the expectation of them being brighter and they don't work. I now know the polarity is the issue, so my question is, can the tabs on the plastic bulb holder be filed off so it can be reverse connected without causing other issues?

I had the same problem but can't remember exactly how I solved it (must be old age!) I think I switched the wires over to reverse the polarity. Not quite sure what you were suggesting, but don't the bulbs have a centre connection on the bottom with the other connection made by the metal body of the bulb (the bit with the pins on)? If so then being able to insert the bulb the other way round won't affect the polarity.

Regards
Anton

Went ahead and cut the 2 guide bars off the plastic bulb holder of the side lights this evening so that they could be turned 180' (and hence reverse the polarity without cutting any wires). New LEDs now work fine. They are a 5 LED design - much brighter and whiter than my other single LED ones. Very happy with this cheap 'upgrade' on an upgrade.

Stewart,

can you tell us where you get them from? Like you I have the HID main lights, which make my original side lights look old and cheap, so would be interested in changing them.

My LEDs were bought on EBay. Do a search on"Porsche 993 LED". It's a BA9S fitting for the side lights and the LEDs come with the correct bayonet fitting. I chose a slim 5 LED design to increase brightness If an LED works first time, fine, the supplier has specified them for the polarity of our cars. If not, you just need to cut the guide bars off the plastic bulb holder so that the holder can be rotated in the loom connector. Note, rotating the bulb itself makes no difference so won't solve the polarity issue.

Stewart,

got the bulbs and used the remove guide bar trick and it worked a treat. 10mins work and makes a huge difference to the lights and look of the car. Thanks for your advice.
