Hello thinking about a turbo that I have seen was left been converted to right by a dealer. Will that be a problem later on insurance wise etc, Also its done 80000 miles and had no engine work done e.g. top end rebuilt. Would it need one at 80000 or not .

Thanks for any help or advice.

I'm sure we've had this conversation recently!! John Snowdon was, I suspect, looking at the same car and I voiced my concerns on that thread too. The thread is http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=217158

The question I would ask myself is "why?" Why would a dealer want to convert a perfectly good left hand drive car to right hand drive. In my view there can only be one answer - to make more money out of the car. Given that that is the answer I find it inconcievable that the dealer would go to the trouble and expense of sourcing all the correct bits to do the job fully. Given that the factory must use many, many parts which are different to the LHD originals and have the advantage that the LHD parts don't get wasted. The dealer, on the other hand, must dispose of the unwanted LHD parts. The amount of labour involved as well as the cost of parts must make it a completely financially prohibitive job to do properly - hence I suspect there is more than a good chance that the job will be less than perfect with a good number of corners cut.

Any dealer is in the business to make money and I find it difficult to imagine why any dealer would go to the trouble of spending several thousand pounds to convert a car which didn't need it. So that leaves the suggestion that it DID need it (i.e. it was wrecked and had to be rebuilt) or he was trying to sell the car for more than it was worth. I can't see that either case makes it a worthwhile buy.

Maybe others would take a diffrent view.

Regards

Dave

Yes, this is the same car as I was looking at. Just to confirm, the car is firmly in the left hand price range, so whatever mark up the dealer would have had from doing the initial conversion is long gone. From what I have found out, the conversion was done quite some time ago.

I decided against it, purely for the sake of simplicity in the case of insurance (being fairly young, the less hassle I have in that area, the better) - I want a UK, rhd, but the car itself looks good.
