Was invited to Leipzig -Cayenne and soon Panamera factory- on Sunday to take part in a corporate event. I have never seen the like of that:
1- 25 Porsches some supplied by the dealer in Hamburg + Porsche themselves
2- Clients with their own GT3 in all guises
After some rather OK exercises in the morning, we were let lose in the afternoon. 1st the circuit, which is a blend of 10 bends from different circuits around the world, including the cork screw in Laguna Seca (generated a spin within 1mn of my morning session from some Germans a bit too keen to get into the action, oh and a 2nd spin by another 20s later...). All in all, a fantastic circuit, with no danger of running / bouncing into anything, now where can you find this in the UK? Even the food and facilities, even if only dating from 1990, were top class.
2nd, when I say we were let loose, we were LET LOOSE! I had my 997 4s cab 4 wheel drifting in a particular corner time and time again, power over steering in 2nd gear out of another every lap, edge to edge action all the time. Had I not had the ceramic brakes, I would have cooked the steels on the spot (I should know, I already did so at Silverstone on mine). I have no idea what corporate events are like in the UK, but this was simply unbelievable!
All in all, I would say that I was very surprised by the cabrio, good enough to go on circuit. I was mightily impressed by the PCCBs, which I would not hesitate to order on my next car. I am unsure about the 4 wheel drive version: it assisted me a great deal traction-wise, but the pull understeer was not the best feel I can think of (obviously lap time wise better this than eating oversteered tyres, but not as fun).
All in all, there is no doubt my next car is a GT3 or an RS, all that Porsche needs to do is (a)produce them and (b)let me loose on that track again to "compare" which one "suites" me...
Of course, I hear Porsche GB is establishing a base at Silverstone, very much looking forward to contrast their facilities and service to Leipzig's.
