LHD -> RHD headlamp conversion

Hi. I have a LHD RS and it has the original headlamps fitted with a semi-permanent sticker for RHD conversion. One lens has a big(ish) stone chip so I was thinking of replacing the lens and fitting a pair of RHD ones.

Question I have is in order to correct the beam and pass MOT etc is it sufficient to fit the RHD lens or would I need to change the entire headlight unit? There is quite a significant difference in cost and my headlights work fine at the moment.

If any of you guys have done the lens conversion with success (or failure) I would be interested to hear.

Thanks

Whilst on the subject of LHD -> RHD conversion, has any one fitted RHD door mirror lens's so that the higher magnification mirror is on the off side as it would be in a RHD car. I sometimes find I have a blind spot over my right shoulder when pulling out to overtake.

Thanks

Is it normal for 964RS to have convex mirrors ?

I ask, as my 3.2 has flat mirrors, and I assumed that that was the norm (I don't like anything other than flat).

Hi John - I could be lying (it may just be the distance of driver to mirror that is affecting size of image) but I thought that drivers door mirror lens was different to passenger. Is that not normally the case in most cars?

Regards

All my cars (including a SC and 2 3.2s) have had flat mirrors. I don't like the distorting effect of convex mirrors, where things are further away than they really are (although the field of vision is wider for convex).

It would be nice to know what is the norm, if any.

Whilst on the subject, when is the next planned trip to Ace cafe ?

All I did was change the lenses and adjust...easy as that...Let me tell you , If I managed to do it anyone can.

Incidentally I bought the lenses from OPC and they were cheaper than the specialists. (about four years ago now)

Thanks for the feedback - lenses it is.

John - Ace Cafe Classic car night is second Tuesday of every month (14 Sept). They are holding a Porsche night on the Thur 23rd Sept which a few of us are also going to. See you there?

Regards

Depends how keen your MOT tester is. LHD & RHD headlamp bodies are different, the bulb is held at a different angle. Some MOT stations will not notice the strange shaped beam if you just change the lenses, some will. As 964 headlamps are so poor it is worth changing the whole assembly if you are going to drive at night at more than 20 mph!

Sorry, but I tried this and the only way I could get the adjustment right was to have the beam pattern upside down. I ended up buying secondhand rhd units (complete) from Alan Wright's superb social event of the year (Husbourne Crawley Autojumble).

I have a very tame MOT man and we fiddled about for an hour trying to get the pattern correct (I fitted rhd glasses too).

I have two sets of complete lhd bowls and lenses for sale if anyone wants them (don't ask me why I have 2 , but it has something to do with not recognising the difference between rhd and lhd units!).

Ah. OK then, that is nice and easy. I think I'll leave my LHD lights on with the semi-perm sticker!!! Until I find some good used RHD lights. I think I have seen them for about GBP80, can't remember of that was each or for a pair. I am sure some will surface whe I least expect them.

Is there an east way to tell LHD from RHD eg part number? Save me having 2 pairs of LHD lights like Mark [:D]

Are the headlights easy to fit ie do they just bolt straight in? Is there such a thing as a headlamp upgrade for the 964 ie brighter light or bulb kit they have tried? So many questions and so little time ........

Thanks all

It is all very well to change the lenses on a LHD car, but as the mirrors are in different positions on the doors they would not be as Porsche intended to give excellent rear view. When driving in Europe they are perfect. So changing just the lenses is a compromise.
Headlight lenses are easy to change and cost around £20.00 from europarts.
