LHD > RHD headlamps question

I think I know the answer already, but if I want RHD headlamps do I need to change the complete headlamp units (probably) or just change the lenses as I've read elsewhere (but don't believe it).

You do need to change the complete headlamps. If you change just the lens the resultant beam is very poor. The actual bulb mounting is different in RHD & LHD headlamps. I know because I tried it.

Yes I thought it ws just a case of changing the lens which I did 7 years ago when I imported the car.

This year it effectively failed on the the beams.........How do you work that one out then? [&:]

I don't go out in the dark!

I have RHD lenses on my LHD. Assume the lamps are LHD. Gets through the Mot fine.

It is the MPCs that cause the MOT guy a few problems! ;O)

I think there will always be opinions - and it's made more "grey" by the MOT test parameters being changed/updated and the fact that there are more than one way of interpreting the "rules". Not to mention the effects of "persuasion" one way or another.

The reality is that LHD and RHD headlamps ARE different - it's not just the lenses. If you get an MOT tester who is a stickler for the rules he will fail a car with RHD lenses on LHD headlamps because the beam pattern is completely screwed. The same argument is true if you have beam deflectors fitted.

That is not to say it will be failed by all testers. It's very much pot luck dependent on where you go, how well you know them and, probably, how much persuasion you can employ to get your certificate!!!

Personally I went the route of getting complete headlamps - others may make their own choice.
