LHD Imports

Hi Dan,

Don't be put off buying a LHD model 964. First of all you will unquestionably discover that LHD are of a far higher spec for the year than UK cars. e.g. a late 1991 "J" plate car is likely to come with the same interior as a 1993 model 993. i.e. full leather, a/c, abs, and dual air bags, the works.

Often thought about going direct to Germany but finding a good OPC that is willing to sell a single car rather than a transporter full might be a issue. Importing one back into UK on the other hand is not an issue. Happy to forward some simple guidance on this if you wish.

Cheers

Look over PP and you will see that there are a number of companies that do the import for you or import and sell on German and US cars. It might worth a look just to see what you can get.

Thanks for the feedback. Reason I ask is I have a LHD 1971 911 and wish to upgrade at some point. LHD are cheaper and "usually" better nick from overseas (climate, etc.) Any way of gaining a few extra years of use is an advantage as it has been for my car originally imported from Nevada, US.

Using a broker may be easier, language thing for a start if buying on the continent plus the paperwork, but I am sure there are other ways. Finally, I have already heard the later models are better something to do with magnesium parts?! plus all the electrics should be fine otherwise this can be costly to rectify.

Thanks for your help so far through the minefield!

Dan

like Eddie I bought a 964 from Thomas at H&S and imported it. I also imported one from Sweden. The process of doing it is cheap and very easy.

have a look at http://uk.mobile.de/ - (make sure you select all countries or else it defaults to UK only) and see what you can get for yor cash.

Theres a thread on the 968 register section of the forum where I went into a bit more detail of what it cost & some of the issues which might be useful

Alternatively find one you like and I'll import it for you for a fat fee :ROFLMAO:

I'm living in Luxembourg & bought a 1990 LHD 964C4 Cabrio a year ago, sourced on www.mobile.de.
You can send a mail to the vendor via this site & usually get a quick response. My car was at Roock Sportsystems Gmbh in Leverkusen & Michael Roock called me back within 15 minutes. As they're a specialist, the car was prepared like a 'new' one, and I've just been back there for an oil change & a few 'enhancements'. The car was 21,500Euros (about £14,500) & has been superb.....worth every penny!
The dealers & specialists usually speak good English and generally tell the truth.....it's the German way.
Also check www.autoscout24.de & www.luxauto.lu is worth a look.
If there's something near me, I can always give it a 'first look' to save you unnecessary travel costs to see a nasty one.
Good luck ! JK

Hi
I bought a 964 Turbo low mileage in Europe and imported it myself into the UK. It is really simple to do and far less expensive than buying a right hand drive version here. As someone once said to me, "All Porsches should be left hand drive!"
I'll happyily give any advice you might need.
Regards

Thanks ! Dunno exactly what the colour is, as the original papers were not with the car (reposessed from previous owner). Shame, as the car only had 84000KM. Anyway, I think the closest is Slate Grey, used on the 911 Supersports, from 1989 onwards. I'll check for more info & let you know if I find anything.

What is the deal with import duty/taxes on bringing the car over and registering it? I am looking at cars which would be at least 3 years old and from Germany.

Will I need to pay duty or VAT etc?

Hello everyone from a first time contributor to the forum.

ORIGINAL: Matt

Having been thwarted in my efforts to buy my first 911 for longer than I care to remember, it is finally going to happen later this year.

For me, LHD is the only way and, as there is no question that the fatherland is THE place to get unrivalled value for money when it comes to cars, I've always wanted to buy my first 911 in Germany, or buy here from someone who has already done the legwork (mentioning no names).

Though I've recently started watching eBay.de and searching some of the deutsche-classifieds, I've not really been able to find those really nice cars I know are out there. I was about to run some wanted ads here in the UK (I've actually got one running in May's 911 & PW) but have just checked out mobile.de and what a site!

There is no question that this is where I will find my car, thanks so much to Matt for the link. I have no idea how this one has managed to escape my anorak for so long, but no more. Only downside is, with 379 matches coming up for 911 and 125 for Cabrio (ragtop fan), I'm not going to sleep for at least a week; not good as I still haven't recovered from the Australian Grand Prix all-nighters!

Cheers everyone, great forum you have here.

All the best,

John Glynn in Northants [:)]

Hi John,
as I offered earlier (to Dan or anyone...), if there's anything you're interested in, I could give it first look for you, if it's with say 150/200km from me. I live in Luxembourg, on the German border, so it may save you a trip to look at a nasty one. Don't worry, I won't steal it if it's a good one.......already got my good one last year !!
Check out also the sites on my first note on the forum www.luxauto.lu & www.autoscout24.de
Good luck,
Jon

Jon,

I appreciate the offer mate! However, the dealers I have been talking to from the mobile.de site have all been strictly 911 people so I feel good about their stock, they really know what they are on about.

If I do buy there sometime soon and I come back your way (and you have time), we could meet up though, preferably at that really cheap filling station in Luxembourg I keep reading about on motorhome sites!

Will let you know what happens.

Cheers for now

JG

You'll need to check with Customs & Excise. Cars over 30 years old often get zero/low import duties and 5% VAT on the purchase price of the vehicle.

I found C&E pretty helpful when importing my 911. Also worth taking a look at the DVLA website.

Hope that helps.

Will
