Life without Bose?

Hi. I've heard that a 997 radio without the Bose option is not a good idea and that the standard stereo is pretty woeful. Would you agree with this and if so, how bad is it? I currently have an '03 996 which does have the Bose option and Audio Pilot and I don't think that it's much good at all, so I'm curious as to how the standard option sounds on the 997. (I'm hoping to change to a used C2S 997 in the new year). Thanks for any replies. Adrian.

I cannot answer re the quality, however, I suggest that the Bose option would make the car more attractive to a buyer when being sold.

I wanted Bose when I bought my car without hearing it, just because I wanted an upgraded stereo. To those in the know, it may not make a difference, but those coming into the P-car club will more than likely prefer it.

I have a 996 C4S (2004/5) with the BOSE and have driven (for extended periods) 997s with and without the BOSE upgrade.

I have'nt found the system in my car bad at all and have had other 911 owning friends of mine comment on the fact that my stereo sounds better than thiers. I dont know if this is down to having a later system?

From this experience, I would always recommend (if the choice is given) the BOSE, as it does sound better through a wider range than the standard system.

And I also agree that it would be far easier to sell the car on at a later date.

Adrian996,

I have an '06 997 with Bose and the sound quality and volume output without distortion is extremely good and very loud with great bass. The sound when playing CD's (or integrated iPod) is even better with the pseudo surround sound selected. My only semi-gripe is that the audio pilot does not seem to compensate very well for the increase in cockpit noise as you go faster.

Bottom line..... Get the Bose upgrade (and I would agree, if I was buying a 2nd hand porker, Bose would need to be fitted).

Sometimes I prefer the sound of a flat six at 7,000rpm though!!!!!

IMHO Bose is a must have - have had a Boxstre with the Upgraded sound package (Std on 911) and then with Bose - Bose was hugely better. Had Bose on my 997 even better still. You do have to play around with the balance (l-r and F-B) and tebble/Base to get the best out of it.

To balance the replies so far, I really don't see the benefit of the BOSE sytem,
it does n't sound that good or do I believe it worth the extra money and have found the standard system perfectly acceptable. In the past 5 years I have sold 3 Porsches, none of which had the Bose system fitted and have had no adverse reaction at all. Spend the money on the the Sports exhaust system, beautiful sound and will certainly help sell the car come the fateful day.

Save your money and enjoy the sound of the car. Better still invest in a sports exhaust and enjoy an even better noise.

Agree with the posts directly above - while maybe the stanmdard system won;t win any awards from audiophiles, it is perfectly good enough, and the money saved from not going for the BOSE option can be invested in the Sports Exhaust!!
