Lifting cars

Having spent an hour under the car with my nose 2 inches from the exhaust I came back to my usual thought of having a home friendly way of getting the car quickly and safely to a good working height. Personally I seem to spend almost as long getting this to my satisfaction as I do actually doing the work.
So does anyone have anything other than jacks and stands? I'm not talking about units with 2 or 4 post lifts as your average domestic garage won't accommodate them anyway.
I have seen a few scissor lift type things and elongated ramps that allow access to lower cars and then allow the back end to be lifted and supported.
Equally is there a modern pit liner with steps and tool racks?
I really think I will be after something as I would be much happier if the lifting wasn't part of the work process - I'm sure I would be much happier tackling work myself too.
So thoughts?

How high are you wanting to get it David?

With a trolleyjack and 4 jackstands it doesn't take more than 5 minutes to get it 18 inches off the deck. Jack up one side using the centre sill point then place a stand front and rear on the approved points, then jack up the other side at the centre sill point and place two more stands front and rear.
