Light and Fog Light Behaviour

The rear fog lights on my '87 3.2 will only come on when the front fog lights are on. It this normal?

Also, the lights behave in a way which I'm not sure is correct. There is no difference (to the head lights' behaviour) between the knob out one click (the green side light indicator now on) and right out (two clicks). In both positions the main/dipped beam is on fully. However, the fog lights won't work unless the knob is right out. This seems wrong, as it is common to want to drive on side lights, with fogs, in very foggy conditions. I have no option to drive on sides, let alone with the fogs on.

Also, with the knob right out, there is no difference between the ignition fully on, and the position before that which allows the radio to work but not the engine. The lights are fully on. A friend with a 3.0 Carrera says his also work like this, but maybe his are wrong too!

I recently had to rewire the light switch, in order to replace the dip/turn switch, and maybe I didn't wire it back up correctly. Before I dive in again I'd like to know what's normal.

TIA,

Jon

Fog lights - the rears only come on when the fronts are on. This is useful, as you can use the front fogs as driving lights on unlit roads, without blinding those behind.

Light switch - out one click, side lights only; out 2 clicks, headlights (and fog light(s), if switched on)

You appear to have wired up the switch incorrectly.

Recently had PCT replace my 1986 Reflector with the later model Reflector with in-built fogs. They work as you and John describe, so that answers the question I was about to ask - thanks John.

Additional question - I can turn on the fogs by either pulling the switch out, or by turning it on 'click' - is this correct ?

Thanks,

Now there you have me - I vaguely remember something like that on my SC/85 3.2, but am not sure. My current 87 3.2 has pull/push switches. Mind you, I don't think that I have ever turned them, so....

Thanks, John.

Seems a little strange, having two switches but coupling them like that. Never seen that on another car, still, so long as that's the way they're supposed to work.

Cheers,

Jon

I have the same issue on my 993 and wondered if this was normal. I guess John has answered my question.

Assuming my early 3.2 is wired correctly, the fog is pull out for fronts, then turn to put on rears........Main headlight switch is first pull sides only, second pull mains...with ignition off though,,,you only get side lights.

Hope this 'enlightens' you![:D]

Now, I know that I am not the person asking the question, but you have answered the thing that was really bugging me, about pull/turn fog lights.

It seems that my old 85 3.2 would have had the pull/turn operation that you describe - I knew that I had seen it somewhere, but couldn't remember where !
Mind you, it was 9 years ago when it got written off, so maybe I can be excused.
