Light at the end of the tunnel.....

Well after some time the car is nearing the installation of the KW. It was delayed best part of two weeks because the chap in Hartech who is the lower control arm bush wizard was on holiday during the first week the car was in so couldn't start on my wishbones in the first week. The second week was the bank holiday week then he had to source an exchage wishbone to replace my 968 wishbone. The completed control arms were returned to Promax last Friday and they have really pressed on and made ultra-quick progress on the installation. Some photo's below :-

On the alignment machine..... (must learn how to post multiple photo's!!)

Just looking forward to picking her up and trying her out now.

Man that looks slammed! My poor car looks like a 4x4 compared to all these lowered cars

Well aparently the rear of my car was quite low anyway and Andy reckoned it wouldn't need lowering much over what it was before. I had always thought it looked lower at the back. It had one side at the rear drop in the cars past and the TB's re-indexed so maybe they reindexed the higher side to suit the dropped side. Obviously the front was not lowered as the struts were not height adjustable and I had the standard springs with the grey dots so the car was at a nose-up attitude.

I'm determined to book up for the Snetterton track evening to test them out but we've just had new uPVC windows fitted, signed up for a new kitchen and have some more home improvements planned for this year so will have to wait and see. Seems like i'm following in Paul Hiluxes footsteps in appeasing the other half by spending on the house!

Not quite 4x4 .........................but certainly rally cross. [;)]

Good pics (what a tidy workshop [:-]). I can sympathise with the house versus car dilemma, being about 2/3rds through a renovation of my own. I am trying to convince my wife that having spent the money on new suspension, it would be a waste not to use it on track. Unsurprisingly this is falling on deaf ears, but I have today booked up for a Silverstone evening, and should be booking a couple more shortly, so look forward to meeting some of you soon.

Hi Scott,

Looking good, very good indeed [;)] let us know how the suspension feels compared to before.

I am interested in this to. My own koni based solution is about half way between stock and the KW. My spring rates are around 210 lb/inch compare to 140-170 on standard cars, whereas AFAIK the KW gives a wheel rate around 300 lb/inch. What has surprised me with this setup is how good the ride quality is on reasonable roads. It only really has a problem with poor surfaces and expansion joints, bumps are no problem at all. As an example the only problem I have with the regular trip from Dorset up to the midlands is noise!

If anything I find the ride in me S2 more relaxing then my Saab 9-5 purely because the stability is so fantastically good (no jiggliness). If I could have the same car with less road and wind noise and more interior space it would be pretty much the perfect car. I wouldn't drive anything else. The sound of an old alfa v6 would be nice as well.

Hmmm, interesting.

There is another thread on here about big project 944's - are you going to post this on there? I mean, that sounds like a serious engine change, qutie possibly a new gearbox, and some pretty big bodywork mods to give the extra interior space. Some extra sound-deadening would be the small part of the project.

Dare you to have it on a track by the end of summer!

Hi Scott

Doesnt have to be a track day, why dont we (and others) just meet for a pint etc?

Paul, sounds like a good idea. I'm always itching to get out to more meets and must make more time for them.

Had confirmation from Promax that the car is now ready. They've taken the car for a test drive and are fully satisfied with it. They made note that my Boxster twists up front could do with some spacers up to correct the offset and get the best out of the set up and the geometry they've set it upto. Other than that all seemed well with the car so no nasty surprises or advisories. I'll be picking the car up tomorrow and taking the long way home via as many twisty B roads as I can find to get a real feel for it. I must admit that I have quite high expectations and am a bit nervous about the reality not living upto them. I'd hate to have any pang of dissapointment after taking the plunge! But so far i've been nothing but impressed with the quality of the kit itself and the service Promax have provided. I'm sure i'll be on here tomorrow with a report of my first impressions!!

I`ll be interested as to your impressions too.

Mine as set up by Promax is great on its (biased toward) hard settings but its too jiggly on dual carriageways in high speed corners (great on track though) so when I take it back to be checked (not supposed to drive it at the mo as I`ve smashed me thumb up badly [&o]) I`ll set it a bit softer for the road.

Good luck.

Well unfortunately I didn't get the miles under my belt that I would have hoped today due to social committments this afternoon meaning I had to get home fairly quickly and I had my old suspension clanging arond in a box in the back of the car so couldn't really give the car much of a workout, however despite my 'reasonably' conservative drive home, which did include coming off the motorway a few junctions early to explore some well known B roads, I can confirm that this KW stuff is absolutely and uttlerly the dogs danglies. To think I was a bit worried about being dissapointed! So far the car feels as tight as a drum and is better than I could have hoped for. It is so responsive i'm almost driving it via telepathy and the feedback is giving me information overload. It feels like a completely different car and feels so much more composed, agile, capable and altogether planted. There is virtually no roll, squat and dive under fast B road driving conditions and i've got standard ARB's with standard bushes fitted.

The ride is definately noticeably firmer but when you hit a pothole or a bump in the road the suspension does soak it up rather than sending a violent crash through the chassis so the ride is still comfortable. My hatch doesn't rattle any more than it did before the installation, in fact it might be slightly better. Although the car doesn't wander due to the camber of the road if you do hit a big bump the cars direction will tend to be deflected requiring a steering input to correct but I found I could manage this easily with one hand on the steering wheel driving in a fairly casual fashion as you do on the motoray - i.e. it is by no means a white knuckle ride needing you to have both hands on the wheel to prevent the car from bouncing into the central reservation.

But the biggest success with this installation is that the car just feels so so responsive and on the well known B road I took the bends at my usual speeds, which although are not anywhere near the limits of the car i'm still not hanging around by any stretch of the imagination, but with the KW the pace feels pedestrian and the car feels like it has plenty in reserve.

It is an expensive upgrade without a shadow of a doubt, but if you want a firmer, more focussed ride that is still not too extreme for the road then this kit is for you. I'm really looking forward to getting her on the track and seeing exactly where the limits might be. So tomorrow I'll be making sure I get her out for an extended spin to get a bit more familiar. Also the service I received from Promax was second to none. They did a first class job, provided advice at every step and cleaned the car afterwards also. Another satisfied KW customer!!

Job done, I'm convinced, where do I sign [:D]

Thanks for the first impressions Scott, I've yet to hear anyone be disappointed by the KW setup

Mmmm, mine doesnt do that Scott it is a bit `jiggly/bouncy` at *cough* very *cough* high speeds but ok at low/normal speeds so needs softening for the road and my imminent Germany/`ring tour [8D].

It sounds like yours `may` be a bit hard at the front, what settings?
Have Promax changed your tyre pressure settings? You dont want to be being deflected (losing grip) when committed in a fast bend. What camber are you running?

We`ll have to have a KW club meet and compare cars and settings [:)]

I'm not sure of what settings the shocks have been set to but the suspension geomerty is probably the same or similar to yours as I didn't specify anything in particular other than sayting to Promax that i'd like a setup that is a compromise between road and track. But remember I have rose bearing top mounts fitted wheras you have your M030 ones that still have some compliance in them. Don't get me wrong, the car doesn't bounce off the bump like a golf ball off a divot, it isn't a problem at all, not that it needs any more attention than you should be giving whilst driving normally, but it does feel more sensitive on bumps - maybe it's just a difference in the feel of the car I've yet to get used to. The top mounts don't seem to have compromised the ride quality too much either. There is a railway crossing near where I live and the car doesn't feel anymore harsh over the crossing than it did before, although I now do feel every rail.

However any ideas I had about adjusting the camber for the track are now well and truly forgotten about. Promax did a few measurements to see the effect on toe-out as the camber plates were adjusted. It was over 2 degrees of toe out at the full adjustment which apparently would probably wear straight through the inner edge of my tyres in one session and would mean the car would have a wandering feeing even when driving in a straight line. I think i'll be leaving my camber alone.

I'm seeing how I get on with it before fiddling with the setting, i'm quite enjoying the go-kart feel. One thing i've noticed tonight though is that with the slightly more nose-down attitude of the car the headlights need adjusting so I can see more than three feet in front of me!
