Light tapping from back of car

Hi All,

Car seems to have developed a light tapping noise which sounds like plastic or glass from rear of interior and happens at all speeds whenever the car is moving but worse over bumps. Is there all the time when moving but is a light tapping and never changes in volume/pitch. Def tapping rather than vibration.

Doesn't sound like clonking suspension/driveshafts and actually sounds far more cosmetic.

I have checked rear seats and plastic interior and nothing seems to replicate the noise. Rear heated screen was fixed in winter and wondering if any metal/cables could be causing it.

Anyone had a similar problem?

Thanks,

Steve

I don't know if the 996 is the same as the 997 but I had something very similar in mine from new and it turned out to be the passenger side rear window "creaking/tapping/rattling" - call it what you will. If you can get someone to press on the windows (which will stop the noise if it's coming from there) as you drive along (not so easy to do it yourself!) it maybe worth a try. According to my OPC it used to be quite a common problem.

I had/have occasionally a similar problem in my 996. I haven't resolved it yet, but i have been advised that it is something in the roof lining just above the centre of the rear screen. Some people have resolved this pulling the lining down and stuffing paper in to pad out whatever is rattling.

Try lowering the backrests on both of the rear seats and see if it still does it. Just a shot in the dark...
