Lights dim at high revs

An odd thing this - when accelerating hard to about 5000rpm the voltmeter dives and the lights dim. All recovers fine as soon as revs drop to 4000, engine sounds and drives fine all the time.
Any ideas?

sounds like a voltage regulator or alternator problem (although i've never heard of this problem before!)

When my voltage regulator was on the way out it did the opposite - the lights (including dashboard lights) went ultra bright, fan went bazerk and voltmeter went off the scale. I'm told that these symptoms are pretty usual with a voltage regulator on it's way out. What does the volt meter and dashboard lights do when the headlights are dimming?

I remember a certain Sierra that did exactly that. "Superlights" and "Superwipers" was the term we used to describe it [:D]

The voltage stabiliser can go either way.

Had to change the alternator on mine, because some times it would charge OK then occassionaly would under charge
