Lights

Dear All

I have just had HIDs fitted to my 993 2S and the difference is amazing but the sidelights in comparison now look dreadful. Are there any problems with fitting LEDs eg superlux led ultrabright? Are they legal? do they get hot and damage the lens covers? Are there any electrical implications? What bulbs have others used?

Thank for your help

LEDs don't give out any heat, all the energy is converted into light that is one of theresons why they are so bright. Apart from the 'E' marking and legality side of things I would say go for them.

Cheers,

I've got a set fitted which were supplied by Ace parts. Look good and as Fred says ( and he's always right ) they generate no heat.

I also think that they make your car significantly more visible in side light conditions despite having a much smaller area.

That's good to hear. I brought some, fitted one, switched on and was unsure. Stood there for ages wondering which of the side lights was more visible.

Decided to take the LED out and wait till I could find my old photographic light meter.

Like you say they look very different and it's all about what visibility they create.

I installed LEDs in the side lights and wasn't too happy with the way they looked, too blue and dim for my liking. I also noticed that they were coming on whenever I hit the brakes!

Alan at aceparts told me how to correct this, but I never got round to it, instead I installed some Phillips Blue vision side lights which are still a bit too yellow, but the light fills the side light much better, the LEDs were too much of a bright dot.

I understand Alan now has some much brighter LEDs specifically designed for 993s to fill the side light better, so that might be worth a look.

I have some sidelight LEDs from ultraleds.co.uk, but despite the fact they match the HIDs perfectly, if you look at the front of the car from off-centre, one side tends to look much brighter than the other. I think there are some available now where the viewing angle is wider, but I've not had time to look around for them.

Photos of LEDs for info...what do you think?

David,
Very useful pics.

From that I'm going to stick with the original tungstens.

1) from the top pic the originals are more visible (if I was running on sides only I'd be concerned about people seeing me with the LEDs)
2) I've been looking around at new cars with factory HIDs and most seem to have tungstens sides.
3) the more lights I change to white the more I'll need to change (interior lights? - then the dash will look "yellow" and I'll need to change that)
