Lightweight Flywheel/Clutch

Has anybody changed their usual clutch/flywheel setup for the RS version?

I understand this is quite a productive upgrade which permits the engine to rev more freely... anyway, I was interested if anyone had any comment on the potential downsides (increased transmission noise at lov revs, driveability, etc.).

Thanks
Charlie

p.s. car is an OBDII varioram so the stalling issue for earlier cars shouldn't (in theory...) impact.

its going up to JZM mext week for a bit of fettling so this seemed like a decent opportunity to build on the chip/airbox/suspension work they did last year with very good results.

Unfortunately it seems anything more in the engine dept. is going to be serious money (the numbers "3.8" keep coming up but i'm resisting so far....) so this seemed a sensible step. Car is a 97 2wd targa so the cost doesnt look too bad so far.

The suspension was JZ Machtech's Roock kit (bilstein dampers and progressive springs - not sure on rates etc.) - it lowered the car a bit and sharpened the handling without sacrificing ride.

I have an RS clutch and fywheel fitted to my '94. You're right about the idle chatter but in addition you also get noise under load from low revs like the older 911s get - once you're moving it's ok. Pickup is better and the car feels more urgent, throttle response is crisper. Mine is an OBDI so stalling issues that required some ECU mapping. One practical point - I do track days, heel & toe so no issues. I have shared the car with another member on occasions who doesn't heel and toe and between up gear changes (up or down) changes the revs drop like a stone from high revs to low 2s - this doesn't make for smooth progress! Changing gear faster on up shifts cured it but on downshifts no such luck. I couldn't get him to heel & toe so on the track days we sort of resembled a Kangaroo! On a serious note it's not very mechanically sympathetic to do this even with a std flywheel, the RS version just magnifies the problem.

That said I loved the conversion and thought it was well worth it.

thanks for the responses - I can see a slightly humiliating kangaroo trip home next weekend if there's traffic on the m25...

Hi
Just adding to your comments regarding fitting 964RS fly wheel to 993.
I believe that 964RS was fitted with Single Mass unit very similar to 993RS Clubsport (RSR),therefore this modification is common and Guru Colin of 9M Upgraded my 993 RS to single about 12months ago.
I am pleased to report the result is really impressive, with the motor reving up so much quicker and sharper
Apart from more transmission noise under load (coffee grinder) and Idler rattle I think this modification is great for all 993"s

John

I'm a bit more used to it now and agree the results are impressive - strangely I get very little extra niose (bit of rattling at idle) but do have to pay a bit more attention to pulling away and changing 1-2 in towns!

Hello Again,

You say that you have experienced very little extra noise , which surprises me , since under 2000revs the transmission is normally very noticable, but sounds fantastic!!!

Whats the next mod you have planned???

I was suprised too - I'd expected some rattle & grind but it hasn't materialised.

I'm a bit stuck for things to do now; further power improvement work doesn't seem to make much sense (£10k to go to a 3.8 with head and valve work doesn't look that attractive, especially with my wedding coming up in august and 993 TTs looking like quite good value these days). The car's had a handling kit and some other bits and pieces and is about right for a quick tourer that you can still spend all day in, although any bright ideas for usable mods much appreciated!

I had the RS clutch and LWF done during my last visit to JZ, apart from occasional stalling in damp weather it is an excellent upgrade, gear chatter at idle is a good noise, airbox vibration at low revs makes me smile, but the extra responsiveness of the engine (chip and induction) is the real reason for doing it. My clutch was on its way out (honestly) and it therefore was a no-brainer. Bite and feel when engaging the clutch seems better.
