Likely condition of S2 Camshaft Sprockets?

It seems that the excessive oil consumption I'm experiencing from my recently acquired S2 is likely to point to worn/shot oil stem seals. Having spoken to a couple specialists the full extent of the problem can't be known until the head comes off. I am hoping that the dreaded camshaft sprockets will be serviceable given my cars relatively low 122k miles. If not the cost of a top end rebuild seems close to £2k!! I don't know the full history of the car so don't know if the tensioner chain has ever been replaced. Do you think I'm likely to get away without changing the cams?

Without any history then it's really impossible to say until the head (or at least the cam cover) comes off.

Our S2 is now at 190k miles and I have had the chain and slippers changed at 90k and 150k miles, both times with immeasurable stretch/wear to the chain and sprockets. Changing it regularly is the only way to guard against it. There is also an argument that the case hardening breaks down on the sprocket causing teeth to snap off but how can you tell if this is poor chain maintenance/ irregular oil changes until one snaps on a well maintained car? I understood that the camshafts last about 120k miles. The teeth on the camshaft can wear, leading to a risk that the teeth can break and then the chain can slip. I had to get both mine replaced at 123k.

I guess that there is no way to detect the wear when the car is being used?

How difficult is it to change the chain and pad and what length should the chain be at?

There is a good guide with pictres at www.clarks-garage.com
